    p38 cruise control

A 10th? Jeez, they've lost a shed load of money since February, I bought an R reg 4.6 HSE with LPG and 115k miles on today for £1500.

What impact is A/C on MPG?

I took mine to Kwik Tit on Sunday for a re-gas. The aircon was working when I took it in. It doesn't now.

What impact is A/C on MPG?

I've experimented with AC on / AC off MPG loads of times and find it very difficult to get more than 0.5 mpg more with it off. On a motorway run it's more economical to use the AC than have the windows open on something the size of a Range Rover anyway, aerodynamic drag makes sure of that.

Ambient temp shows 0 even when it's 25 outside

Mine's in the first 3500 P38s built, so it'll be that on mine. Irritating when it's fine the rest of the time, blend motors etc all behave and the AC is ice cold when that's what I want - unless the ambient thingy plays up.

    Releasing a stuck clutch.

I freed off a clutch on a Classic the other week by starting it in 2nd gear with the transfer box in neutral, the clutch pedal fully depressed and right foot firmly on the brake. Popped the transfer box into low, Rangie jumped forwards about a foot and the clutch was free. Made a bit of a clunk...

Ambient temp shows 0 even when it's 25 outside

Mine does that most of the time. I find that starting the engine, then switching off after a second or two, then switching the ignition on again tends to sort it out. Sometimes takes a couple of goes, but it works on 9/10 attempts. I'm hoping it's just the outside temp sensor is knackered...

Auto only goes in first and reverse

I suspect it might be a good idea to ring Ashcroft Transmissions. If your LR specialist says they're different, I'd say they're probably right, but the ratios, etc are identical between the 4.0 and 2.5, and they both use the 4HP22.

    Who Know's

The little toggle on the indicator switch is the dimmer for the dashboard lights. If it's manual, then to select low ratio, you STOP, apply the brakes, depress the clutch and select neutral whilst keeping your foot on the clutch. Now press the "Hi/Lo" switch on the dash (the button furthest to...

Looking for a alternator for rangie/ Liverpool

GB Autoelecs on Longmoor Lane. Ask for Dave, tell him Pete from the Limos sent you. 0151 521 8766 Alternatively, I think it's reasonably easy to get a Ford Scorpio Alternator to fit the Perkins. I scrapped a Rangie with a Perkins 4203 last week, and that had a Scorpio alternator on. Call me...

Auto only goes in first and reverse

The diseasel uses the same ZF 4HP22 as the 4.0, which is a different box from that in the 4.6. I don't know about the bellhousing, or if the torque converter from a 4.0 will fit the diesel though, so be careful. The gearbox itself isn't very heavy - unless the transfer box is attached, so if...

The offacial LZ Lift & Shift Thread

One of the groups I use has a similar operation known as the "Underground Railway" for some reason. It works well, covers most of Europe, but can take its time. Payment is normally in beer and / or curry, which is a bonus.

    How hot is your lever

That's strange. My petrol turbo doesn't build up enough heat to get the gearlever hot, and it produces a lot more heat than any other motor I've known in a Disco / Rangie.

Differences between various Range Rover Models

I take it this lot is an option then?

    How hot is your lever

I suspect you have major issues with your engine earth. Check the earth straps between the engine and chassis, I suspect your problem will be the transmission selector is being used as an earth. Happens quite a lot.. The auto gearlever isn't directly connected to the gearbox, it's cable...

    Steam from oil filler cap!!!

Mine is always there as well. If it's very bad traffic, and I've been in it for around 20 mins, it might rise to a couple of needle-widths above that, not never gone any higher.

    Wheel Arches p38

Same as the ones on this?

    High mileage P38

All that makes sense. I bought a '95 4.6 HSE with 181k on for virtually pennies (£1500 with £1200 registration included) and it's been pretty bloody good. Needed to replace a radio amplifier and it will need heater o-rings soon, but otherwise it's excellent. I love it to bits.

    alpine radio problem

US Spec Alpines only tune with odd numbers after the decimal as that's FCC radio standard spec. I've had a couple of US market radios and that seems pretty standard. AM radios go up in 10s instead of 9's as well, so you can't get many stations on AM over here either. Talk sport is 1 out.

    P38 base model upgrades?

Don't bother. You can get a nice P38 with all the toys for sensible money now. There doesn't seem to be much of a price difference between all the specs. Upgrading yours would involve changing the BeCM and a load of other bits if you want everything to work, and the cruise control rarely works...

Price of second hand 4x4's falling

Prices have fallen spectacularly. In January I bought a 2000 P38 4.0 Vogue for £4000 (from the trade) and sold it, that day for £6000 - which was a nice day. At the time they were fetching around £7750 in the condition etc this was in. In April I bought a '95 4.6 HSE for £1500 - including a...
