Is it me or has the resale value of second hand 4x4's fallen dramatically. Im looking at getting a TD5 Disco, and when I look on ebay, very few of them are reaching there reserves, and the majority of them have ridiculous reserves and most of them are attracting no bids at all.
A few of my mates have sold their defenders recently which all sold for less than I would have expected. I know the economic slow down and diesel prices have played there part, but I do get a feeling that if I buy a Disco TD5 it will be worthless in the next few years due to 4x4s being frowned upon.

Yep prices have been falling steadily for the last 18months the biggest problem wasn't the Public perception of them as gas guzzlers but more the fact that the market was awash with 2nd hand 4x4's not just landys but all makes. However the recent tax increase and Fuel price rises have added to the drop in prices and I doubt very much if it will get any better. Unless your a buyer of course in which case it's great news.

Prices have fallen spectacularly.

In January I bought a 2000 P38 4.0 Vogue for £4000 (from the trade) and sold it, that day for £6000 - which was a nice day. At the time they were fetching around £7750 in the condition etc this was in.

In April I bought a '95 4.6 HSE for £1500 - including a proper ageless private plate valued at £1300 (as in the plate people offered me that much, in cash, including them paying the transfer fees etc, for the plate, that day). It'd had one owner from new until January, the second owner paid £4650 for it, and I bought it three months later for £1500. Other than a couple of minor electrical gremlins, it's fine. Nothing wrong with it, but someone took a £3100 hit in three months.

I can't see it ever getting cheaper than that for a decent one, but the people who've paid big money for them in the last 12 months must be in tears.

Hopefully the values will firm up a bit in the nearish future, but to be honest I don't care. At current prices a nice Range Rover is worth it, even if you're paying for petrol you're still spending less than Average Joe with a newish Fiesta is losing in depreciation.

Of course, if you've bought one for big money, you may as well keep it as you'll never get the money back.

Think I am going to take the plunge and buy a 2001 Disco TD5 S tomorro, with 120k on the clock for £3500. Its only a basic spec, but its pretty straight, the rear chassis is fairly rusty mind so needs a good waxoyl. Does this sound like a fairly cheap price.

No not really offer him £2750 and if he says no sod him there'll be plenty more for that price in the next month or so. and waxoyle won't cure the rust. It'll just hide it while it carries on eating away at the chassis.

Redhand do you think the price is going to drop again in the next few months. Its the cheapest Disco and straightest I have seen. I thought it was a bargain, but need to do some more research, as im not to keen on waxoyling an already rusty chassis, or buying a disco that will drop in price significantly over the next year or so, as I would prefer to buy a 300tdi, for buttons which would not depreciate.

Infact I have no need for a Disco what so ever, just like the idea of owning one for the driving position, and there practicality, so can wait for a decent one, as it would be nice for the basics such as air con and crusie control.

Oh I think it's inevitable that they'll drop over the next few months Fuel prices are still rising. This new tax banding is going to frighten people off and interest rates are going to go up as house prices fall. meaning more money on the mortgage and less on toys. Finance is also going to become harder to get so fewer people will be buying cars.

Can't be that bad, i just spotted me old Krauty on Autotrader through a dealer for nearly 3 grand more than i flogged it for last month! bloody thievin bastid dealers!

Aye but that's a dealer for you and asking price is never the selling price. He'll probably be expecting to get a grand more than he paid so he's over priced it. By the time he's negoitiated and knocked 2k off he'll be happy and the buyer will think he's got one over on the dealer :) As if

Yeah, i know yer always gonna feel like yer bin shafted with a big un when dealing with dealers, considerin he initially started off offerin me 3 and a half grand LESS than i eventually got i'm just glad i held out! ...and i still got me landy out of the deal so water under the bridge etc, am generally a happy man!

Aye tis a ****er!!!!

I paid £6k for a 2001 D2 ES (85K) just under a year ago.
Book price at the time was £8-9k but it had been CAT D so I thought £6k was about right....I think I would struggle to give it away at the moment.
Not a problem as I was planning on running it into the ground and getting it a bit muddy now and then if the Defender was poorly.
But my wife informs me she want's shot because of eco guilt FFS........
NO DORIS YOU ARE KEEPING IT

Paid £7k for my Defender, think that was a bit strong but hey ho, still got two good cars for about the same as a Ford Folkarse

having same problem here, bought my 2001 ES 7 seat auto in dec for £9995 from 4x4 dealer, spent £1000 in jan on 20" alloys and chrome side steps, now need to sell and not getting any calls for it at £6,500.thats a £4,500 loss in 5 months if i can sell, its just a case of cut your losses and get on with it.as for the new tax next april, anyone who buys mine can put 6 mths on,then 12 mths and get 18mths tax at todays price,at least saving a few quid
