Well, so I ordered that Half Shaft last night, and this morning a spare Front Axle Seal, Caliper Carrier and a packet of those Spring Brake Hose U clips as there is one of those missing too, Brake Pipe cable tied into it's Chassis Bracket  Then I took it out for a 32 mile run up to Cluanie...

    Axle and hub ID

Yeh I guess the shafts is something I've not accounted for changing. I cannot find part numbers on the items I have and as originally posted, the parts diagram doesn't match what I have. I.e. the stub axle is D shaped rather than a tab, but doesn't have the seal in the back. Hub has the two...

Enjoying this thread. Jealous as feck of anyone who has a decent place to work in and a lift. sure beats doing everything outside on gravel. As to the seal on the end of the rear half-shaft/hub, I know you didn't have to do it in the end, but did you not have room to just ease it out a bit then...

    Diff Lock does not unlock

No way to put a torque wrench on those bolts anyway, the right size ring spanner leaned on does the job. When you get around to doing the seal on the ball housing put bolts back with thread lock. It is likely a snapped half shaft or splines in the drive flange, [ could be either side ] start...

Series 3 Matching a half shaft to a stub axle query.

Hi Joe, Both shafts connected by the uj have passed through the swivel pin housing/bearing and oil seal and are engaged in the diff. The stub axle slips snugly over the half shaft and is centralised eventually by the hub drive member. when the half shaft is pulled outwards it touches the inner...

Other what have u done on ur disco today

I replaced the F/N/S drive shaft seal, and wheel bearing a while ago. Used genuine LR part. Seal gave up in about a month, with just as much oil splashing about. Waiting for a time I can be arsed to strip it down again, and take a look at the shafts, to see if they have shredded the lips.If so...

Defender TD5 Leak ball/swivel front axle

It sounds a fair estimate to do the job properly, i.e remove wheel, remove caliper, remove hub, remove swivel housing, remove half shaft, remove ball, replace seal, refit as reverse. To cheat and leave everything attached and just undo the swivel ball pulling the ball, housing, shaft, hub all...

    Axle and hub ID

as i said before, its an early disco so use disco parts diagram, shafts ftc3186 and ftc3187 have a surface for a seal and are 10 spline which would require stub axles ftc3188 and hubs ftc860 i believe but cant be 100%about hubs

    Defender 90 drive shafts

That is the way,, have at it.. the farm navara is on the ramp today, i drove it last week, commented the brakes were soft and spongey. Fluid all over a rear shoe, so wheel cylinder was the thought, closer inspection it is half shaft seal. Apparently the easiest route is new shaft bearing etc...

Series 3 Matching a half shaft to a stub axle query.

Both shafts connected by the uj have passed through the swivel pin housing/bearing and oil seal and are engaged in the diff. When the stub axle is fitted the half shaft bears against the inside of the stub axle. Is this correct?

P38A Duchess is in the garage!

New axle oil seal fitted to derusted and painted yoke, New lemforder top and bottom balljoints in. Unfortunately I somehow managed to knock the garter spring off the rear of the seal either when I was tapping it home or when I was struggling to get the half shaft to engage into the diff.:oops...

    Axle and hub ID

I had a G reg 90 that has a rear axle with brake discs, so obviously converted. I’m trying to work out what’s what. The set up For hubs is as per this parts diagram - i.e. part 10 spacer, seal either side of of the hub. The stub axle isn’t like the image - it has the ‘D’ shape rather than the...

Disco 2 Front hub replacement, which make ?

I finally got the lower ball joint in today after having the extra sleeve made up, applying a bit more heat & plenty of sweat (I must admit the ball joint fitting tool took a bit of abuse where I had to hit it, then tighten it several times to get the last half in:eek: . Although the joint is...

    Daves D2 TD5 Project

Yes I could have done that, but turned out it wasn't the Hub Carrier Seal ;) It has had an ABS Sensor recently on the rear left and whoever fitted it didn't notice the O ring was missing, I replaced the O ring, cleaned it all up and no more leak ;) Regarding workshops, my specific issue is...

...on the phone :) Also (Shhhhhhhhhhhh), there is no sign of any Oil from my "Ahem cough cough" temporary repair on that left front Half-shaft Seal job :) Hopefully my Clear left front Indicator will arrive today, it is winding me up having one orange lens when all the others are now clear ;)...

P38A Mot woes - upper and lower hub carrier balljoints etc

Leave the steel sensor sleeves FTC2249 alone as well as the screw in tapered collet FTC3572. CV joints are cheap enough, might be worth replacing them if the boots are to be replaced as you have to remove the CV joints from the drive shaft to replace the boot. I replaced them on mine at Euro45...

    Hub leak

Having redone the rear drum brakes and wheel bearings on my 200tdi 90. There seams to be a slight leak from the dust cap via the end of the half shaft after its first run on both wheels. I was probably slightly excessive with the bearing grease when I did the bearings. We drove for about 3hrs...

P38A Mot woes - upper and lower hub carrier balljoints etc

Well the car failed its mot on the 11th, both n/s and o/s front lower balljoints boots split , all 4 front lower shock absorber rubber bushes perished (not when i took them off to replace them they weren't), n/s/f cv gaiter outer clip missing - god knows when that parted company and the nearside...
