I don't know as not actually regarded it - so much of Otto is scattered about the house and garage at the moment no point looking at him. I cant see why it shouldn't be metal though, plenty of other pipes are. Might want to check sort of metal so you don't start electrolytic corrosion with the alloy though!
Mate of mine years ago had the exhaust rot out on his 750 Kawasaki. New collector box was north of £200, as was a Motad or Marshall 4-1. Header pipes were good and it was already on pattern silencers. He measured the pipes and worked out that a standard compression plumbing fitting would work. So about £20 later he was on the road with a pair of T pieces and a cross tube for the balance, and a pair of T pieces and a pair of 90 bends to link 2-1 each side in front of that. Lasted a good few years.

It certainly makes sense with regards to future-proofing it but I guess the main reason from the factory would be £ out of their pocket. Plus you don't want to fix a problem forever because you're not going to make money then. Certainly something worth looking at as a long-term solution. I bought a top hose that seems to have a much thicker plastic piece for the t-piece but it's like they've plastic welded it into place. So as this is only going to be temporary, until at least spring next year, then it'll doat. Only cost £15.

Had to put fuel in for the first time in many months as I had to go long distance,36miles return journey to drop off our Day2 tests . Cruising down the M56,at 80 before I realized, that new exhaust made such a difference to the noise level.luckily I wasn't going far and had backed off for the exit as a police X5 pulled along side at the top of the slip road.:D:D.

I had a 'nearly' on my bike a while back now.
Coming onto dual carriageway.. car puts it's got down and starts burning dino flesh with a black plume that got in my eyes and made me gag.
Shut my eyes and trusted the happy handle until i was well clear.. breathe again and do back to 70ish...
5 series pulls in front with a message in the back window... WATCH YOUR SPEED
Needless to say when i got off the bike and checked.. top speed was 126
