Hi Guys

I bought my Freelander 1 in March 2006, and I've just had to have my 2nd replacement set of front discs.

The vehicle is driven by both my wife and I and neither of us drives in a manner to over exercise the braking system. Checking back through my records, the front pads were 1st renewed at 19495mls, then, at 37123mls, discs, pads and the o/s/f caliper were renewed.

Now at 68200mls, the discs and pads have had to be changed again. At the same time, some of the metal brake pipes have been replaced.

Should I be worried or am I to accept that this is normal wear and tear.

Steve

new disks everytime you change the pads?
they should last much longer than that
I'd be looking at the effectiveness of the rear brakes, this could be the problem.
I know there is a split and the fronts do most of the braking but they do not do all the braking.

30k isn't good milage for discs but if a caliper sticks it causes undue wear on that disc - hence requiring a pair put on.

The metal pipes won't have anything to do with disc or pad wear but if the flexi hoses deteriorate then they can block the free return of the brake fluid and cause the brakes to drag, again causing excess wear.

If the pads wear down too far and go metal to metal with the discs it is recommended to replace the discs as well due to surface degradation.

But brakes are one of the most important parts of any car.... If in doubt swap them out!

Is it an auto? automatics often use brake pads faster. Although as far as can tell my V6 is still on it's original discs and pads at 37K miles.

I just changed mine and I understand that they were the originals. Changed at 116,000 miles, which is what I would expect. It is an auto.

I fitted Terafirma grooved & drilled discs and EBC pads.

I thought I read somewhere that the guide pins should be replaced at the same time as the discs.

I did even though mine appeared ok.

not necessarily ,if there are good then no point ,its more stuff that runs together like discs and pads ,rotor arm and cap etc

No. Just with new rubbers and grease.

There are 2 holding on the calliper to the hub and 2 holding the slider to the calliper, and 1 screw holding the disc to the hub, mine all came off without any problems.

Thanks. I just changed my discs and pads. Thought I should replace the guide pin bolts as they're a bit rubbish (and may as well replace the guide pins as well whilst I'm at it).

I think a lot of the trouble with guide pins is that people use copper grease on them for lube. This is a bad idea as it swell the rubber seals and of course road salt gets in, which is why you should only use correct rubber grease, as comes in the packet with the new ones. I had to change themon my last Freebie and all my Pajeros as someone always advises people to "Yoos Coppur greece on um" or illegible words like it...

Guys changed my discs and pads on my 2006 TD4 today and found when I bolted the calliper back onto the calliper carrier the top bolt doesn’t seem to be gripping so it looks like I’ve got to change the guide pins on that calliper. Can somebody please tell me how they are changed please. Thanks in advance.
