Remote fobs

Hi, I'm a newbie to this forum, although not to L/R "Series" vehicles. I have just bought a late 2001 1.8GS Freelander. It came with 2 keys, but no remote fobs. There is no problem with starting or locking/unlocking manually, but it would be nice to have a working remote. I see various people selling new or "refurbished" fobs on Ebay, but there appear to be a number of different types. How can I identify the correct one? Unfortunately there is no "security card" with the vehicle, so I dont know key number etc etc. Even if I buy a new fob, I will have to get it programmed, or can I do it myself?
Is this a job best left to the Stealers, who will probably charge an arm and a leg?
I realise this is an open forum, so I dont expect info that could help a crook

, but any help in saving a bit of cash would be appreciated.

You don't have to use a main dealer. You can use a locksmith who has a computer he can plug into your landy. You are better off buying the fobs off whoever is gonna programme them for you as like you have already said there are several types and frequencies about.

with ratty on that one. then if it don't work, you don't have to pay. you could buy a fob that is u/s or end up with a dodgy locksmith/garage who blame the fob, when they can't do it.

main stealer will try and have you for an hours labour minimum, and it should only take about 10 mins. There is a post on this forum from clutchdust, saying exactly how long it should take.

For comparison i priced a new fob from stealers last week, £43 + coding which can be around £50

I know where its from and have 2 coded keys, so I think its ok thanks - just the remote has gone walkies.

Dragging up an old thread, done a search on here and this is so far the only thread I can find. I'm in exactly the same position. New car (to me) comes with two keys and no fobs. Is the local auto locksmith still the way to go with this to get some key fobs?

Jesus. Talk about a resurrection!

Check on eBay for a service that sends you the fob and a programmer, you then send the programmer back.

There have been various posts where keys have gone missing and these solutions of a key and returnable programming unit have been good options price wise. Not sure if they include the fob though or just key with immobiliser pickup.

Thanks both. Can't find any on ebay. But I'm guessing the below is the same thing? I was hoping to find it cheaper then £65 per fob.
