need some advice really.my 300tdi defender seems to be losing power.checked turbo boost and that's ok.intercooler seems clear.I'm getting black smoke on a run.not clouds but you can see it in the mirror.she doesn't use any oil or water so I'm wondering if I've got problems with the fuel pump.how would I know if it's had it.engine runs sweet so I don't think it's an injector problem. Egr valve is shut off.its not bad off road but in high box up hill it struggles and a hill start is painful.help required as I've ran out of ideas.:boink:

air starvation ,are you sure all turbo pipes okay not split on pressure side or sucking in on suction side

Checked all pipes and can't find any leaks.maybe I've got restricted airflow through the snorkel.goes into quite a small pipe but this power loss is something that seems to be getting worse slowly.

have you checked suction side for delaminating internally, remove pipe off inlet to turbo at turbo try it prove/ disprove, how did you check boost?

My mate fitted a boost meter temporarily and it was fine.I'll have to have another look at pipes.everyones pointing that way.

Where was the boost meter fitted? Although more difficult it would be best to check boost pressure at the inlet manifold to prove the full path.

not sure where he took the reading from but he said today it was fine.checked hoses and they all seem good.very awkward problem.

If you've ruled out the turbo, worth moving onto the fuel.

Suggest:

- Clean/replace air filter
- Clean replace fuel filter

If no improvement start checking for air getting into fuel lines - would usually see a more lumpy engine than the power loss you describe, but could be worth a check.

James usually recommends replacing a section of fuel pipe with clear so you can see any bubbles.

Thanks for that.I'm going to start with the tank and clean that out.read a few of the other threads about 300tdi problems.just seems with the black smoke it's overfueling.maybe fuel filter is clogged.

Hi try checking that the lift pump is working ok, take the fuel filter off if it is only half full it is most likely the lift pump.

Started this thread earlier in the year and sorted all my problems. Worked and ran well all year. Now the last two weeks when I start my defender 300tdi it starts on the button but has no power for the first 100yards and has cut out once. After this it runs perfectly. Has anyone had anything like this happen and what was it.

Hi, think lift pump is good and cant find any other faults. Maybe just a cold weather problem. I've been letting it warm up for a few minutes and it's been ok.
