Auto. It's a good box and far nicer to drive. Keep that fluid changed regular and if youre towing make sure the box cooler is up to scratch.

Manual has a stiff clutch, gearboxes are weak anyway, it's generally better with the auto.

handy to know for me too, id prefer an auto in a big old bus like a disco but was worried about the expense of an auto box if it went wrong

i rebuild both and drive td5 auto which i much prefer to manual ,cost of repair is actually very similar ,just people tend to buy complete recon when its not normally necessary with auto

i have always had a manual disco, i always thought manual was preferred to auto for towing! also does the auto have as much power as manual? as in acceleration

which is the better all round gearbox? have a manual now but is there problems with the Auto?

Depends what you want though. Auto has less gears, so wider spacing, which means worse performance and worse mpg. Also the auto ones I've driven I have found woefully underpowered.

On the flip side a manual is frigging useless at changing gear by itself.

James, do you know,
each time i read your knowledgable replies,
I see someone who has been there,
done that,
for years mate.
Thanks for helping me out reciently anyway.
and no, i`m not bull****ting, or anything else before anyone starts,
i just repect knowledge...

I told my missus this! this man knows what he is talking about, is very helpful and describes things is an understanding manor
So hey james thanks from me too!
i always read your replies to others threads or problems,
keep up the good work

same power obviously ,never tried but autos do have sport mode holding upshift

Same power at the engine but less power at the wheels. Torque converter is less efficient than a clutch. Taller gearing means less torque multiplication and arguably less low speed and off road control.

looks like we will be looking for a late reg, low miles and in excellent condition td5 auto, not the tdv6 of the modern era!! with its modern day techno problems,

never found mine sluggish, and it isnt chipped ,t/c isnt less efficent its just a different system ,and past 50 t/c is locked so no different to manual then ,but auto means better control during slow maneuvering, has engine breaking in manual mode ,no difficult hand brake hill starts better in ice or snow as torque to wheels can go from nought to as much or little as necessary

so all in all, an Auto is ok? the myth of auto for towing has gone?
is there any real things i should look for when test driving an auto, i have driven an auto before as a courtesy vehicle and owned a Volvo T5 auto, but what problems does the
Landrover TD5 Auto have?

generally just clutch pack A or freewheel clutch ,i allways check oil colour but it does mean getting under with allen key something that might not be possible ,but delay in between selecting and moving and upshifts

i have a td5 manual and used to have 300tdi auto. the auto i would prefer driving locally apart from the extra cost of fuel. the manual is better for motorway even with the torque converter the auto felt like it needed another gear on motorway thats why i went for the manual this time and with the manual i decide when the gears change so i can get a little bit more mpg although i liked the auto box if you are planning some long trips i would go for the manual box

best mod i made was an uprated TC on my td5 auto.

mines been mapped and boost adjusted and bloody flies!

Had a few issues but nothing to worry about.
