Preparations for COLD - minus 5c

I've just spent a year in Sweden - last winter there was maybe a week or so at -20, and a couple of months in the -10 to -15 bracket. My Td5 was standard (no special oil/anti-freeze), and kept outside (albeit sheltered by a few fir trees), and worked fine all winter. Heated screen and seats...

Flashy things that go on when you un/lock

This is possibly my first post on here with a serious question. Over the weekend the flash function stopped working on the lock/unlock via the key fob. 2003/4 Defender 90 XS. Did go through a lot of water down in the borders. Still works as indicators and hazards. Is there a separate relay...

    Chequer Plate?

Should be fine, I'm only 72kg, but no problems with the wings. Don't know about the bonnet. Generally use the ladder at the back to get up there though.

Why do you love your Defender?

I may have this posted before - still hate computers - clumsy fingers (and no, I'm not old, just poor on IT). With you on the wave - always has my better half asking whether we know them or not, and then getting paranoid. (Which of course is my job). It is a hoot to drive, and, as long as...

    Mot Pass!

Which bit of the Borders Trax? Always on the look out for good people. We use one up in Edinburgh at the mo.

    Are bullbars always modifications?

I wouldn't know whether it is original or not, but declare it anyway. In my own case the various alterations made to my Defender (prior to me buying it) made no difference to premium. I would anticipate they could be worried about 3rd party damage. These days they will look for any excuse to...

Patriot roof rack - can you open the sunroof?

I can go and measure if you want. Guessing, about 4 inches clearance, increasing to front to maybe 6+ above windscreen rail. Pic on my intro might help.

    90 to Germany?

Agreed. We just visited some one in Yorkshire on the way down, which made it convenient. 'member if your trip takes you through France (don't know where you are going) you need 2 breathalysers in the car, and they are pretty strict on wearing headphones. Have fun.

    90 to Germany?

AA or RAC overseas cover would be wise. And anyone that can sleep in a 90 at 60 mph has my respect. You're in Barnsley (went to school for a while not far from there) - do they still do the run from Hull? We used Eurostar, which I have to say was totally stressless, except for the poor food...

    90 to Germany?

You'll get seriously bored. Lots of CDs/MP3s? We did it a couple of years ago (to a friend's wedding celebration), but in the 911. Got it up to 257kph, but better half's knuckles were white on the door handle, so didn't go any faster. Don't think that'll be a problem in the Landy. We were...

    The amazing self-opening door!!!!

Mine has stacks of spacers under the locks, and still pops open now and again. It helps if you shut the door with a firm push, rather than trying to slam it. Build quality. Don't you just love it.

How reliable/unreliable has your defender been?

After 18 months, pretty well perfect (loads of wood being touched). Last service and MOT, and a few frittery bits about £130. The Porker was about 10 times that every 6 months, with brake discs made of digestive biscuits and the only engine I've ever had lunch itself on me. That was the most...

    Wave Etiquette

I always wave (to other Defenders) unless I'm doing something important like steering, changing CDs, or applying make-up (unlikely). In the country, probably about 80% return. In town about 20%. When I stayed in the north of Scotland the one finger wave was the norm. Also look as dour as you...

    Protecting paintwork?

Mine is the same colour, albeit older. Scratches all over the place. I've had Autoglym put on it. Seems to help a bit. On the other hand it's a Landy - don't stress about it.

Just so you know there are others out there

Thank you, and thank you CB40. I love the car. Been in the nuthouse for ages anyway.
