for information rather than how to fix guide.

went to feed the moggies at me mothers, and met a mate coming down to ours with some beers. as he pulled up to the road junction, his motor swerved violently as tho he was trying to a handbrake turn. stopped to investigate, only to find the offside rear wheel fouling the rear of the wheel arch. lookin underneath we found the radious arm had parted company from the axle. (this is the second motor i have seen do this within two weeks)

temporarily ratchet strapped the axle to the chassis, wedging the radious arm between what was left of the bracket and the bottom of the coil spring. limped it home and drank the beer.

took it to the workshop next day to sort it out properly.
DSC00047.jpg
radious arm removed, with remains of bracket.
DSC00055.jpg
new bracket welded on and arm in place. bit messy as the underseal was still wet.
unfortunately forgot to photo unpainted bracket and cleaned up axle tube.

so, if you drive / own an older disco / 90 / 110 or anything that has the flimsy radious arm brackets, it may be worth checking the condition of them!

ps not sure how these pics will come out on here.........
sure someone will advise if they dont work!

We had the same problem on a previous Disco TDi 200.

It broke off while my wife was driving, fortunately she was going very slow and on her way to a mates house who is a very competant welder.

What scared me was the thought of what could have happened if it snapped whilst on the motorway! I would recommend that anyone with an older Disco replaces the brackets, they are not expensive, but its likely they will go at some point so prevention is better than cure!

Happened to my Disco 1 as well, only going slow, I think the strain of the chassis twisting and turning at the same time broke what was left of the metal,
Welded up and all rustproofed...pheeew:rolleyes:

Never seen that before...ever..until now...

I'll have a wee peep at mine and see what's what...

I take it I'm looking for corrosion or cracks?....or do they just let go?

Shudder to think what would happen on the autoroute at 130km/h fully loaded and with the family on board...:eek::eek:

To be honest your unlikely to see how bad they are. I'm often under my Disco and I didn't notice that they were badly corroded. Its only until the go, will you know. Personally I would change them as a preventative measure, the cost is negligible. half hour with a grinder and half hour welding. New heavy Duty brackets are £7.00 each. Look at the pics of what was left of mine.

I had this happen on my 200TDi fortunatly 50 yds from the house at 10mph. Friend came round and welded new one, happy days. However landy handled a bit weird nothing to put a finger on and after replacing every bush bearing and shim at the front end turned my attention to the rear. on examinatio and a bit of measuring found that one side of the rear axle was 1" 1/4 further forward than the other. Only explaination was the new bracket which premade by Bearmach assumed to be direct replacement. Aligned correctly on the horizontal only leaves the dimention of the bracket in question. No one here has mentioned issue with this. Answer? Probably replace the other with same componant and measure again.
Any suggestions welcome.
