have drums on the rear of my 90, have the offer of a complete disco rear axle on calipers for 50 notes, what I would like to no is from people who have driven both and done the swap is the braking improved that much to warrant the swap, I'll be fully rebuilding the axle before I fit with new calipers seels disks etc so few pounds n want to no it will be worth it

Cheers in advance for any replies

I found the drums to be a pita if I did any sloppy off roading, always struggled to get them off for cleaning the crud out and then setting them all up again. No or little hassle with discs imho, no improvement in braking that I remember though.

What flossie said ... Braking improved for me, but then my drums were nackered too .. :)

Drums in good order are fine on the rear,if it is better braking you want then you need to look at the front [ they do most of the work ] make sure all caliper pistons are free, the servo is working and disc's along with flexi pipes are good.
A good upgrade for your 90 would be to fit the larger so called 110 calipers, they became standard on both models with the introduction of the tdi engine and it is just a bolt on job.

Swapped the back axle on my 90 for a disco one and made no difference to braking performance on the road. The only advantage is maintenance is easier for discs and its easier to see what their condition is. I only did the swap as the original axle was rusted to pieces.
It is easy to do though, straight swap just change the drive flanges over.

I always found the drums on my 90 to be quite good. Could easily lock the rear wheels if you weren't careful, and stronger brakes don't make any difference if you can do that. If your drums are knackered then you will, like most things, see a difference between an old standard setup and a new mod setup.
