We all know that the book states that a 'classic's auto-box's fluid level should be checked when the car is level but finding such a situation (unless you have a dedicated workshop) is virtually impossible. Even if you sus out a suitable area the chances are that you have to drive there, but the 'box is supposed to be cold when it's checked :( Just how much does the level reading vary between taken when cold & at running temperature?

fairly level is okay it doesnt need to be measured with a spirit level, a little above or below the mark wont hurt level dosent vary greatly when hot

Would take issue with that one James. Many vehicles have two dipstick markings one for cold and one for hot. Varies quite a lot. Some boxes topped up hot to level, won't even show on stick when cold.

No need to panic iv always done mine hot or should I say warm it runs out faster and the new oil will be cool anyways it's stated like that so silly peeps don't expect to come say of a long motorway hall and one burn them selfs and two oil expands when hot I mean very hot don't forget to change all gears when filling and engine must be running when checking oil level ,so fill up put plug back in star car up run through gears in standstill and put back in park and refill if needed.

Think he is asking about checking level not changing oil. Obviously you drain when hot, as you do when changing any oil.

You could get a near as makes no difference level by using a trolley jack and axle stands. Saves having to drive to somewhere flat and waiting for the oil to cool.

Thanks for the varied replies guys, situ seems much as I figured - 'oh I do miss a level driveway, still you can't have everything!
