I've been offered a 96(P) V8i with SINGLE point lpg. it has had a massive amount of welding (needing over 1M sq of mild steel) among various other stuff to achieve it's last MOT. It's now suffering overheating problems. It has 160k+ miles with vague steering, useless cruise control and most of the usual issues with central locking and leccy windows. On the plus side, as it is ex-police it has no leaky sunroofs but the alpine windows are not really waterproof.

1) What's the likely overheating issues?
2) What would you give for it? (6months MOT remaining)

It's white too, which is not most desirable lol.

over heating could be anything from needing a new stat upto HG or new rad etc - might just even be an airlock

LPG might be worth 50 quid to someone wanting to gas an old series

the rest probably no more than 300 quid - bit more if it's got good rubber

but then again you can easily use a square metre doing all the normal patches a disco of that age would need - but i bet it'll need a whole lot more soon

Thanks Sean. Kind of confirming my theory that if it has got that bad, there is worse to come! I'll keep to my original thought of a tidy 300 TDi then. With a good few grand to throw about I think I'm better off waiting for something that has been nurtured rather than last minute repairs!

Trouble is if it's cheap enough, say less than £600 you could spend, say, another £600 on welding/parts/spares etc and then know you've got a motor that is solid.

Or you could wait forever for a £3k minter and never get one good enough ... ;)

how much was it up for ?
It was a "make me an offer" affair. I know the car and have done a few hundred miles in it myself and other than the fact it was a full time job to point it in the right direction it wasn't that bad. Some of the welding (rear arches and fron inner arches) had set fire to the wiring for the LPG system. It did intermittently not work, but on the whole it was ok.

I reckon time is on my side, surely? I am not shy of tools and have a variety of enineering qualifications. I would rather enhance and personalise my purchase. The option in my hand would be Robin's Disco but the wife demands an auto. Bugger of a job really!

LOL, yeah, skip that one then ... ;)

If the missus wants an auto, for peace' sake I'd probably get an auto .. though I dislike them personally.

Reckon robint would swap my wife for his Disco? She is a good cook and awesome at making money appear from nowhere (always useful for a landy owner!)
