If something engages when you select difflock, I would have though the gearbox is ok.

Have you had a look underneath to check that the props look alright?

Where is the rumbling noise coming from? I'm thinking transfer box, diff or CV joint.

Piggy I've got a transfer box In Yeovil if it turns out to be the transfer box. If it's running in all gears then it doesn't sound like gearbox. But I've got 1 of them as well if you need it

i think its a diff or halfshaft..you need to try and get all 4 wheels of the ground and see whats turning and what aint..

Or drop front prop and engage diff lock if it doesn't move the problem is in the rear axle or rear output shaft. if the flange is turning then it's rear axle. if it isn't it's the transfer box.

Whatever the problem turns out to be I've got the parts to replace em.

Is it me or do we seem to be having a lot of transfer case problems at the moment.

If in normal drive and neither prop is turning the I would bet on the transfer box. probably a shreaded sun gear in the center diff. having said that when they go they normlly jam the diff up solid so make sure its not turning either prop in normal drive.

a big tip from me as I've just spent 3 day's under mine on the drive trying to change my t/box is either get to pit/ramps or get some other mug to do it as they are fookin heavy things and as usuall with landy's nowt's going right !!!!

Hope this helps cos I'm about to stick a match to mine and phone the insurance !!!!!!

its a 200tdi and i dont think either prop is turning and i think i can drive in all gears if i put it in diff lock? i will double check 2moz at work. is it a gearbox out job to do transfer box without taken the whole box out?? thanks for all the advise will check all that i have been told to check!

I reckon its gotta be best to start at the cheaper options first shirley?
Halfshafts
diffs
then check intermediate gear/gearbox output shaft.
Before thinking of tbox or gearbox.

@Piggy. With the box out of diff lock, run the engine and stick it in gear. The prop shaft that is spinning will be the one that 'points' to the axle with the problem.

If it is drive-able then you can always pop it up to me and I'll take a look. Contact details on the website (link below). :)

right guys ive put the disco on an ramp with all wheels in the air and OUT of diff lock in gear BOTH front and rear props turn but ONLY rear wheels turn but you can stop the rear wheels with your hand but you cant stop front prop with hand!

IN diff lock both props turn again but ONLY rear wheels turn!

when out of diff lock and in mainly 3rd / 4th/5th gear you can hear rumbling noise from front of transfer box where the front prop comes out! so im thinking its transfer box and maybe front diff????:confused:

Nope drive will always follow line of least resistance. so if an halfshaft has snapped all drive will go to the broken shaft. Engaging difflock spilits drive to both axles forcing the good axle to drive the vehicle in 2wd.

ok wise ones i will do as i am told!!! so do you think i should take the front diff cover off and have a look at what ive got when out of diff lock and in gear and see what moves and what dont?? what do you think??

how do you think this could of happened as all i was doing was driving through the little village to get to the water holes on the other side of the plain near the immber village i think?
