Morning All,

I have had a new noise for a bit, a woo-woo-woo or even wuh-wuh-wuh noise from the front whilst turning right.

It disappears when I straighten up, or turn left.

I was thinking front left wheel bearing, but whilst doing the service this weekend, I tried to rock the wheels holding them at 12 and 6, then at 3 and 9 but coudn't detect any play anywhere in any wheel.

Any ideas anyone? About what it might be, and also are there any other ways to check for a worn wheel bearing.

A bit of googling has suggested it might be the tyres (they are 40,000 miles old), I swapped them around whilst doing the service and it hasn't changed anything so I'm discounting that.

Lastly, there is a kind of low pitched grumble from somewhere around the front of the car. Sounds a bit like the car is doing that Tibetian throat singing half heartledly. It comes on at 70mph, you have to listen for it pretty hard, and sometimes I think there might be a bit of vibration through the floor connected with it, but sometime I don't.

God tell me what's wrong!

just check the tyre tread for uneven wear, could be wearing more on one edge of the tyre.... but like you said if it didnt change anything it might not be it.....
for the vibration get your wheel alignment and wheel balancing done.....i have a car at the moment that needs it done and at 110kmh it it vibrates a lot...

worn wheel bearing , they dont always show play whilst been noisy but if you wait long enough they will

Steering pump? Maybe change the fluid?

I get a hum over 70mph. Been trying to trackdown for years. Then I fofound the radiator deflectors / seals missing and strangely enough, ordered some new ones on Monday. Will let you know if that stops it.

He's definitely got uneven wear on some tyres but IIRC it was one of the rears?

well you'll be sleeping well then, its always a good feeling getting something new and ground-breaking done.....!!

UJ on front prop 1st cheapest and easiest thing to do then the wheel bearings

Changed all the UJ's last February, so I think they should be fine. Unless I did one wrong of course!

I have got uneven wear on the front left outer edge, so there's definately a bearing/tracking problem there somewhere.

I think that's probably it then. Does anyone have an opinion on what brand to replace them with? I hate Britpart, but genuine Land Rover ones are very expensive. I haven't got a press, and frankly would rather pay the extra to make the job quicker and simpler so would want to replace the whole hub assembly rather than just the bearings and races.

Timken.

Thing is Wammers, what assembly do I buy to make sure they've got Timken inside?

A quick look at Island 4x4 shows Britpart or Allmakes. God knows what they're fitted with.

Exactly. You do not know. Fortunately i do have a press so it is not a problem for me.

True, but you don't know how long it's been sat in a rainy yard rusting before you get it... And I'm a bit funny about using second hand stuff that's takes so much load.

Rimmers do an OEM version for £280. And THIS PLACE do one that specifies it's built with Timken bearings for £210. I've never heard of or used shopforautoparts before though.

You could try the dealers. I got a new hub a couple of years back for £180.00. Guess they are wanting to clear the shelves of P38 parts now.

If you don't have the tools to change the bearing one option is to get a bearing at £90.00 or so and get a garage to fit it for you. Or get the Allmakes hub which is marked as OEM for £210.00 or so and fit that. Anything else is a gamble in my view.
