Hi, My Freelander 2 TD4 2008, died within 30 seconds of starting, now refuses to start. Battery good, fuel good. AA made a visit and said showing CPS fault, cleared fault recheck and CPS showed again with an indication of 184. Without the aid of AA, I replaced CPS and no change, I have now removed crankshaft pulley and trigger wheel giving it a good clean. Still not starting, looking for any help please

I doubt it but seeing as you have replaced the CPS maybe thought it could be fuel, i wonder if the new CPS is ok ?

If it thinks the CPS has a fault it won't be using it so presumably that is the problem.

ie it thinks the CPS has a problem - not necessarily that it does.

You look to be examining the CPS related gear, but maybe rodent activity in the loom?

Is it deff crank position sensor and not cam position sensor?
Best way to confirm is with an oscilloscope, that way you know it's sending the signal.

A did you get the correct crank position sensor? There are 2 types, neither is compatible with the other's reluctor wheel.
The cam position sensor can also fail, but will prevent the engine starting, but if it fails while the engine is running, it won't stop the engine.

I hope you locked the cam and crank in the timing position before unbolting the crank end bolt, as the cam pulley drive sprocket is held in alignment by the tension on the bolt. If the bolt is removed, the engine needs locking in its timing position, before a 'new' bolt is refitted. Not locking the engine in its timing position, will cause a cam timing error, which will effect starting, power, economy, and could lead to valve/ piston contact.

Can you post pictures of the crank sensors and reluctor wheel that is fitted.

Hi Nodge68
I ordered the cps by vehicle reg number, and for what its worth they appear identical. I have removed the aux pulley to inspect the reluctor wheel, I did notice room for movement on the sprocket within. I have ordered another genuine cps and will fit this. If I can get it started I will then get it checked over by a professional, thanks for your help.

ps will send some pictures

Geoff
