Crankshaft sensor p0336

Hi All,

I’m after some advice, I’ve got a Freelander 2 2.2 diesel auto. Last week it decided to die on me, around 2 miles from home. The AA came and checked the battery etc and could not get it started other than using easy start, then it died again after a few seconds.

The only code that comes up on my cheap code reader is P0336 - crankshaft position sensor.

I have changed the sensor and also the trigger wheel behind the crank pulley. The trigger pulley was in bad condition and thought I had solved it once I saw that state of it but had no joy.

If anyone has any suggestions I’d really appreciate it.

Crank sensors are a common failure point, but often it's caused by a faulty plug, which doesn't give firm connections.
Some questions.
What year is the vehicle?
Did you lock the crankshaft and cam shaft with locking pins before removing the the crank pulley bolt?
What make sensor and wheel did you fit, and were they a matching set as there are a couple of designs?
Did you check the condition of the plug, namely for corrosion or spreading of the contacts?

The car is 2011, yes I fully locked the engine using the 2 pins and the tool for locking where the starter motor sits.
This is the sensor I fitted:

The plug itself looked to be in good condition and was firm when I connected it.
The guy from the AA did mention I could be something to do with the immobiliser? But am I right in thinking it wouldn’t even try to start if that was the fault?

Those are the correct parts, so shouldn't be stopping it from working if they're not faulty and the sensor has a firm electrical connection. I've had to replace my plug, as it was suffering from high resistance in the connectors.

If it was the immobiliser, the engine wouldn't even turn over.

It's worth checking the throttle body, as those can stick closed.

Also what is the fuel level? Less that ¼ of a tank?

I will double check the plug and cables tomorrow and also the throttle body, I did clean this fairly recently when I changed the short hose that had a split in.

That was my thinking regarding the immobiliser.

The fuel was low when it conked out, I have put some more diesel in and it’s above 1/4 of a tank, I will try and bleed it through also. I’m Just confused as the same code keeps coming back when I try and start it after clearing the code.
