Now I'm looking into what make of snow tyre is best for my F.L 2 this winter as it's predicted that it's going to snow for quite some time!

It's currently on Pirelli Scorpions but I think they may be poo in snow!

Nokian won the auto express winter tyre test, with Continental winter contact TS850's 2nd.

I have been using Continental winter tyres for the last 3 winters. I wouldn't drive on anything less than winter rubber in cold weather.

Winter tyres are not (just) for snow. They are for now, when the temperature is less than 7c. They work much better in cold, wet, slush ice and snow.

Had Scorpions on my wife's VW Tiguan. They were OK in snow and ice tbh. It wasn't as good as My Freelander on its well worn factory Wranglers but I expect that has more to do with the 4X4 system than the tyres.
If you are worried get the best you can afford.
 
Definitely go with the best you can afford , they are definitely better than normal tyres in snow/ice. I don't know if they make these in your size but the only ones we use in our cars are Avon ice touring. These seem very good .
 
Pirelli Scorpion STR's are more than adequate in snow, had them on my car til I got my AT's. Never once got stuck, even in deep snow, towed people up hill's from a standstill without breaking traction once...
They're an M&S tyre for a reason
 
My FR2 was fitted with good year wranglers and had some major slides in the snow couple of years. Ago so bought a set of Vredenstien wintrac extreme 4s and the transformation in the snow was amazing. Last year drove 340 miles in deep snow and drove almost 100 miles on the m4 and. Never saw another car as the snow was that bad and we managed good 60 all the way and never had any issue whatsoever
 
This link is in Swedish for tyhe intro but the tyres are all standard brand names.
This is the list of aproved tyres for use in winter in Sweden. It is law that they are fitted from Dec1 till 31 Mar here. If you have never driven on real snow tyres in the snow you can not get close to understanding the difference.

This is what I have been trying to tell 4x4 drivers about for years but feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall.

But winter tyres aren't just for snow in the UK. As they are a more flexible compound at lower temperatures, they grip a dry cold road better than summer or AT tyres, and stop in a shorter distance. Even at 5c.

Glad to see the Cooper ATs on that list, despite not being a true winter compound. Maybe they are an all season compound? Better than straight summer tyres. The rubber might not be the best compound as real winter tyres, but the tread pattern and design (siping) help a lot I'd guess.
 
We are allowed to use studs here from oct 1st till April 15th.
I live out in the boonies and the wifey has them on her FWD. Adds a whole new dimension to traction when you hit ice. Not really so pleasant on dry tarmac though, but not a lot of that around here this time of year. :D about 6 inches of new snow outside this morning as a matter of fact. :crazy_driver:

The Cooper's are an M&S tyre, so have the softer compound with more natural rubber as found in pure winter tyres

Well I can't find fault with them. 2 weeks ago did 480 miles (240 one way) and on the return hit black ice for 100 miles cars all over the place most driving to fast. I was down to 40mph (speed limit was 70) in 4 wheel high and took my time and was down to 30 mph for about 60 miles because of hills, added 2 hours to the trip. But preformed very good. Love them coopers at's

Just can't drive like a idiot got to slow down. There were cars passing me and several went into the ditch, and lots pulled off the road at the gas station and burger shops waiting for the salt truck to come out.
 
That's the truth. My Golf on Conti TS850 winters was amazing- I could still drive like driving in the rain in summer. The weird thing was, when I went into idiot mode (handbrake turns, ahem) it gripped instantly when I wanted it to. In other words, I felt in total control and it only slid when I made it.
