All this road salt can't be good for the environment either. It comes to something when you see coastal plants such as samphires growing on motorway central reservations.

Neither is the rust that falls off the cars, which is caused by the salt!

Wonder how much longer tratters would last before starting to rust if there were no salt...might be at least 9 months now instead of rusting before the first owner takes delivery!

They last for ever here........... Most all snow and ice removal is done with trucks that have plows on them. And our grit is mostly sand with salt added

This is how we do it

Should do it like the Japs with ash... Plenty of it in biomass powerstations. And you've seen the condition of cars that are imported from Japan, it's very rare to find one with rust!

Very true.

One thought that sprung to my mind back in 2010 I think it was, when we were running out of salt stocks, due to usual local council mismanagement- why not just use seawater? We have plenty of it lying around our coasts and it doesn't freeze at our normal winter temps. I guess most of it will run off the roads and drain away, but it's still cheaper, surely?

But yes, I'd rather see winter tyres by law and less salt on the road.

Could also make a compulsory bad weather training part of the driving test as it is in Scandinavia, easy done, conditions can be replicated on a skid pan or something. Car control is just as important as hazard perception!

And compulsory post-test motorway lessons- the most important being STICK TO THE LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING!!! That really, really ****es me off...

I had to do that "halkbana" course. It is something everyone should at least have the option to do. Not just educational but what a riot!

Well, we grew up doing doughnuts and slides in the car parks in old Cortinas when it was icy or snowy. The council stopped all this when they fitted speed bumps everywhere in their car parks. It taught us how to control RWD and slides in the slippery conditions.

It's just no fun anymore...

 I still have lots of fun with my RWD this time of year:D 180's are so much fun in the main street of town

Went out in the first real snow of this year here in Sweden. About 100 mm (4 inches) of unplowed snow. I put a set of

Cheap tyre but made by Nankang.
Traction control or ABS did not kick in once during a 100km back road trip. Could not be more pleased with them.
