During the recent floods, while tentatively entering 11/2' of water a careless Pajero coming the other way broadsided me with a wall of water (must have hit the water a 30mph!). The water went straight into the air intake of my 300tdi 110 and wrecked the air filter (fortunately no other damage). I was wondering if anyone made a cover (mini snorkel) to prevent side on egress? - not keen on fitting a full length snorkel.

just fit a full one before you need to fit a fooking engine

simple if you think about it

No one makes a half snorkel as there is no call for one, you either snorkel or you don't. You could possibly make one but your better off just fitting a proper one and then you know you will ne OK.

The depth of water wasn't the issue so a full snorkel not required (+ if i dared to fit one, all my farming mates will rip the p*ss). All i need is a cover to prevent another idiot from forcing water down the air-intake. If no one makes a cover time for some diy...

Well then you have some fecking weird mates, im a farmer, and i would say 50% of the farmers i work with/know have a snorkel fitted too, and if not then they are all considering it or are thankful when ive helped them out of the ****..

Why?
I ain't saying yu shouldn't have one, but for normal farming needs, how often do yu go through 2foot or more water?

Not the case here; can't think of a single neighboring farmer with one fitted! What do you farm, salmon?

Very true, i don't use the snorkel on the farm, but you've clearly found a need for one. their purpose is to protect the air filter and engine through water and thats exactly what your looking to do, its up to you, but it seems logical! I know one bloek has one fitted as he has a deep ford between some fields of his.. but other than that they have them purely in preperation for anything else, tey enjoy greenlaning ect, and also with the weather we have recently had, its a good idea IMO

A Wolf Intake Cover is designed for that -

It covers the intake hole in the wing and draws air over the top of the cover panel, from behind the grille that is backed with foam to catch any splashes -

They cost a small fortune new, you can sometimes get them cheaper on eBay.

A fullsize snorkel will be cheaper.

So what? Why do you care? Are you just trying to fit in? Do you look to your neighbouring farmers when deciding which jacket to buy?

If you have a need for a raised intake, bloody well fit one. If you get a bit of a ribbing - so what? Laugh it off and tell em to F.O.

Jeez

That's my point, I don't have need for a raised intake. All I'm after is a splash guard to cover the prone mesh intake. Why would I spend a couple of hundred pounds on a piece of kit I don't need? Seeing as the only option is the expensive Wolf option I'll fabricate something & save my money for something I do need.

A snorkel is £70 I'm sure the wolf intake will be equal to that if not more, and won't do as good a job ! I'd rather be more prepared than I need to be, than do the bare minimum. Just my 2p

Buy a snorkel then laugh at your mates when they knacker their engines with water ingress, anyway I be a farmer and I had a snorkel, I removed my safari one to replace with a tin one

I've found the picture I was looking for :)

It shows an exploded view of the Wolf intake -

If you can't find a Wolf one cheap enough, it'll give you an idea of how they work, if you fancy making something yourself.

With all the recent Ops in sandy climates, a lot of Wolfs have had the LH intake replaced with a snorkel and dust filter.

Quite a few of the removed intakes have found their way onto eBay ;)
