For no apparent reason I suddenly got a message saying my driver's window was not set.

I have tried to reset it, as per manual. by puting the window completely down then back up straight away but no joy.

When you put the window up you get a "ratched" sound when it reaches the top as if it doesn't realise it is fully up

Any ideas?

Thanks

You're doing it wrong. All the way down, keep the down button depressed for a couple of seconds, then all the way up, keep button pressed for a couple of seconds again. Message should change to FR WINDOW SET. Where the motor stalls the system marks as the end of travel.

However ratcheting sound may be stripped gears. If the reset doesn't work you may need to take the door card off and have a look.

As Rasheed said, sounds like the regulator teeth are worn which is a common problem on the P38.
A replacement regulator will cost around £30-£40 off Ebay and is fairly easy to fit.

If however the message and associated "Bleeps" are getting to you, there is an easy "Cheat". Get a stout piece of wood or similar, about 6"-8" thick, lower the window in one movement from closed to open, hold the switch in the down position after the window has reached the bottom for a couple of seconds. Insert the wood against the top of the window aperture and raise the window with the switch. The glass will contact the wood, keep the close window switch made until the message "Window Set" appears in the message display. The window regulator will still be knackered but the message and bleeps won't keep you awake !!!

i thought that when the window was set it would only go up to the set hight ie. stay 6"-8" open

Thanks for all your replies, having removed the door panel I can see that the regulator's teeth are worn.

I don't suppose anyone has an idiot's guide to replacing it

Thanks

"Destructions" are in RAVE.
Basically, lower/raise the window until you can see & access the channel that supports the glass and lifts/lowers it. Remove the two spring clips, one at either end that fit on to two nylon pivot blocks, taking care not to drop them inside the door cavity, tape the glass to the door frame to support it when the regulator is removed.
Drill out and remove the three pop rivets securing the regulator to the inner door panel, you may have to slacken the window motor bolts off for clearance, remove the regulator assembly. Refitting is the opposite. You can either pop rivet the new regulator back in place or use three M5 screws/bolts and nuts around 12mm long which will do the same job...can't understand why they did not use screws in the first place because replacement of the drivers window regulator is one of the most common faults on the P38.
