But it'll look stupid gaffa taped to the front of a land rover, right? :)

Ok, you've probably guessed I'm in need of an education here. What should i be looking at? What's good? what's bad/over rated?

shame your back wont last 26 years of pullin on that tirfor..

warn 8274 gigglepin gearbox on the front and a superwinch epi9 on the back,,works for me:D

why do peeps think using a tirfor/jet rope style winch is hard work on here

maybe they haven't used em, or are just big girls ......

Thanks for the replies everyone.

So what should i be looking for and why?

Just trying to get a bit more knowledge about them. Out of interest why is this one crap?

Not asking because ive set my heart on it or anything, but it'd be good to know some more specific critisms of them. I find it tends to be more useful to hear about specific troubles people have had about things. Just to give me more of an idea what to look for.

I'm sure Tirfor winches are great but I've never actually seen someone use one on a winch challenge, or a pay/play day. Common sense shows that if you need to winch a 2 ton LR up a steep slope or over an obstruction it can't drive over, then there will be a fair amount of work involved in that, and it will take longer than an electric (or otherwise powered) winch.

I've no experience of the winch in the original post but I can give a thumbs up in general to 'budget' winches. Obviously there's a life expectancy and lesser quality, but for occasional or non-critical use they do a good job and are good value for money. I think a lot of it comes down to people who have paid a lot for a winch and they need to justify in their own minds the expense, so they 'perceive' it to be better when in fact the budget winch can do the same task.

Its good to hear someone saying that they are pleased with the Budget ones, at the mo I am in the position of looking for a winch, but cant justify to myself for the amount I would use it, to spend the amount of money for a "Label", I know a few people that have brought the "Non Label" ones and are happy with them.

Looking forward to the bun fight about to start here.

Couldn't agree more with you there, people are very quick to slag an item off, but never specifiy exactly what is wrong. Half the time you wonder if the user is imcomptent.

or the fact that it has been totaly abused, and not used as per manufactures recomendations.., plus when you buy a landy with one on you dont realy know its history.

Very true, as with anything mechanical there is a degree of maintenance to be done on it - doubtful if that has been carried out or not.
