hi all
ive read through alot of the winch/battery/split charging threads and just when u think u sussed it some one throws another reply into the mix lol.
i have a disco 200tdi and i have just got a superwinch x3 4000lb capacity off a friend.now the big question,best route to take ?
the winch will only be used on the rare occasion i get stuck (hopefully rare) so do i need to go down the twin batterys and split charging or can i just uprate my starter battery to a monster size one, connect the winch to it via a isolator ? also i think my alternator is a 65 amp would this need to be uprated aswell ?
any feedback would be much appreciated, nothing to technical tho :)
many thanks all

i have a 110 husky superwinch on my 200 tdi offroader wired direct to the battery and i have had no problems with it in 3 years standerd battery and standerd alternator never let me down ever .i just keep it running when winching but keep the reves up around 1500

yea thought 4000lb was abit weak but it was practically free so thought that was worth using with the friction of the wheels turning or am i wasting time and effort lol

stick it on a quad if ya got one thats all its good for,a disco stuck in mud and using a 4000lb winch even with a snatch block will struggle and burn out quick as a quick thing my advice save up and buy summit a bit more up to the job

i got a superwinch s4000 free for my disco as well... strange. anyway, straight up to battery and no problems. but i only use it to shift remains of trees out the way of tracks etc.. BUT i did get stuck with my rodies on on some 4 inch of slippery clay crap, and the winch pulled me out dead easy. would just struggle if you were up to your axles in boggy crap. light work will be fine. saved me getting the tractor anyway

I have a 12,000lb winch wired straight to red top gel battery on standard alternator, my 2nd battery and split charger are just for accessories, extra power outlets, etc.

Not alot of point in revving the engine, there's no way even a 100amp alt can keep up with the power drain of a large winch......but it is worth running for a while after you stop winching to make sure you can start up again

Currently running a 9500lb winch, twin batts, split charge and standard alternator.....no probs for me winching on idle, can turn off and restart straight after :D

Also had a TDSC 12000lb on my last 300TDi running standard battery.standard alt etc, no problems there either.

4000lb aint up to pulling Discos up steep slopes but ideal for moving things around, even on the flats where you need a little forward motion.

On tarmac you would only be pulling 3/4 of the vehicle weight if recovering the vehicle up a slope of 45 degs. 4000lb is approx 1800kg. Even on a single line pull the winch should move the vehicle if it was stuck on ice for example. Personally I would double, treble or even quadruple the line pull (depending on the surface type) and then use a high rated strap on the end of the cable/snatch block to increase the range of the winch to compensate for the loss of cable length due to the snatch blocks.

I have a 2000lb superwinch that I use as a back-up winch and it's always done what I want it to with no problems even when used as a portable winch and running off a jump pack.

gotta remember the max stated pull of any winch is only on the last few turns of cable left on the drum, and reduces as more is wound back onto it

Hence the additional snatch blocks and lengthening strap.;)
or just buy the correct rated winch and not expect an underpowerd winch to work harder hence increasing the risk of it giving up the ghost,;)
a disco stuck up to its axles in mud is going to be very difficlut to budge with a 4000lb winch no matter how many snatch blocks and straps you put on it
