Winch - 12V or 24V?

spending most of his budget on unnecessary electronics probably wasn’t part of the plan

The way I'm reading the setup he wants is to have the car's main battery remain isolated except when he goes to charge. For the winch he wants two separate batteries for the power of the winch. Am I understanding that correctly?

I agree spending more money on useless electronics isn't the best way to run what he would like. However three batteries is way more charging than the factory alternator can handle.

Personally if I were considering a winch i would only buy two things, the winch and a high quality deep cycle battery (just one) and have that be the main car battery as well as the power for the winch. It will avoid having to buy many batteries, it will avoid the fuss of running wires and it will be sufficiently strong enough without putting too much strain on the alternator.

err, no!
I thought my original post was fairly clear -

"I have no intention of installing a split-charge system. Instead I'm going to wire the winch to two 110Ah leisure batteries mounted in the tub and re-charge them from the mains after each use. They will therefore be entirely separate from the vehicle's electrical system."

anyways, I've gorn an got meeself a 12V one and the 2 batteries turned into one 110Ah deep-cycle jobby plus a 20A Intelligent charger.

All I need now is a winch bumper or mounting plate for under 50 quid.

Sounds great. I missed the line about the independence from the vehicle's charging system.

As for the winch plate I can only offer eBay as a source. Or perhaps fabricating one yourself. Good luck on it.

If you guys would take the time to read my Introduction post you would see that the golf isn't my only car. If you would like to get a brief intro to my car history please just ask. However since this thread is about a winch and how to install it in a landy perhaps we should stick to that topic. What do you guys think??
