I'm not a fan of winches, prefering me Tirfor for occasional recovery. However, on a fairly regular basis, I need to drag small / medium sized felled trees out of the woods, usually up a slope. So, I'm therefore thinking about getting one. I have no intention of installing a split-charge system. Instead I'm going to wire the winch to two 110Ah leisure batteries mounted in the tub and re-charge them from the mains after each use. They will therefore be entirely separate from the vehicle's electrical system.
I could wire the batteries in parallel and use a 12V winch or wire them in series and use a 24V winch.
My instincts tell me that a 24V one would be a better bet, due to it's lower current draw making it more reliable.
What do others think?

go 24v yet got 3 batteries ta charge so i guess u would have ta beef up yer alternator
ah fooking tell yer!! ah read yer posts and i despair. no kidding you got me seriously worried about the future of mankind. or have you done the sensible thing and had yerself neutered

i put extra lights...4...plus 2 huge game viewing spots on the landy and i beef up my alternator coz i wanna be ****en sure it dont pack up on me when im 2 or 3 thousand miles away from home...u pompous pricks cant go that far in any direction. come to this part o the world and find out what gettin into **** is all about. ****en arsehole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so yer dint read the original question but you attempt to answer it... what method do you use?

the "fook it! i'll just guess approach"

or the "i've no idea what i'm talking about but if i try real hard i might manage to provide a sensible answer to atleast one enquiry"

or perhaps you prefer , and i suspect that this is the one for you.... "i'll just type any old **** and if anyone points out the error of my ways i'll post a mean nasty comment about them. the comment doesn't have to be factual as i'm in a huff now cos it's bin realised i'm a complete arse"
