if you're replacing the chassis too, speak to Richards and they'll modify the Series III chassis to take the 200tdi, so that you'll not be chopping the engine mounts and battery tray about. No point in taking an angle grinder to a nice new galvanised chassis.

so if a 200 fits, will a 300????

genuine question, as I might have plans..........................................

Yes. Check out Dr Peppers recent thread about it.

If you get a 300Tdi from a Discovery it will fit the Series box; you do have to drill out a couple of holes IIRC. And there are some engine mount issues, but nothing particularly serious.

The 300Tdi is (IMHO) an easier conversion because of the higher mounted turbo. A Disco 200 will go in as well but you will need Defender manifolds to relocate the turbo to get around the turbo clearance issue (particularly in a LWB series).

or buy a downpipe adapter to fit the 200tdi,cheaper than tryin ta fiund and payout for the defender parts;)
one in the for sale section ;):D:D

thanks guys for the good tips and advice. reason I want an old series 2 or 3 cos free road tax!!! and good tip about asking richards to modfying the chassis series 3 t accomcate the 200tdi and get downpipe adapter. and etc one more question on this topic will the disco axles also fit into the series 2 or ?? I assume it is leaf spring? or do they do springs and absorbers same as disco ?? I want a nice simle no fancy electric 4x4 swb sereis with 200tdi engine and bug wheels and I will be on way to lifetime landy! trying to convice my mssus that this landy will outlast all the cars on the road!

Disco axles are wider, plus they're coil sprung, that's a lot more work to change. You'll lose the tax free status if you change Chassis, Engine & axles, as you'll basically have built a hybrid.
