Pls... I drive a shogun and am thinking about Landies (ssshhhhhh don't tell anyone)

Why is this car so derided by everyone is it something fundamental or are landie drivers all sheep?

Just a question...no offense intended.

Cheers

some people here dont think of them as "proper" landy`s  and yes certain one`s are troublesome and have faults , but dont most manufactures have troublesome models :p
I`ve had mine a 99 1.8 for nearly 3 yrs and its never let me down  bugger now i`ve done it , probably die on me tomorrow now :p

dunt yer just love that old chestnut about 'most manufactures have troublesome models '
most manufactures recall them and fix the problem, they don't just come up with some half arsed solution then wash their hands of it.
i run a car that is 16 years old that has done in excess of 160,000 miles and apart from the head needing doing when a coolant hose burst the only item i have replaced are normal things that wear out such as brakes and bushes.

Can't comment on any reliability issues cos I've never had one. Freelanders are a kind of sanitised, modern vehicle designed to appeal to people who want the badge but don't want a dirty, noisy, capable vehicle. They are for girls, the school run and cities. Ther are not a Proper Land Rover.

but when yer say that slob yer comparing a jag to what can only be described as a rover. thats why i may have older cars but there proper fooking cars to begin with and they never let yer down.
i feel ashamed when someone says "oh i drive a landrover" then yer find out its a freelander.
was constantly doing heads on them years ago and the ones recently have all been drivetrain faults. they had the td4 lump though and they seem to be good engines

ave had new cars before and they always seem to have some teething problem. whereas if yer buy a car of a certain age, that has bin looked after, then all the teething problems will have bin dealt with ages ago.
problem with the gaylander is that the teething problems don't go away.
take daft and his 6 grand in a year, that more than its cost me to buy me jag and run it fer 4years ( not counting petrol and ins)

aw! yu say the sweetest things:D nuffink like makin a guy feel good is there?
oh don't get upset! take solace in the fact that others can benefit from yer experience. atleast then if yer stretch yer imagination , a bit, you can see some good came of what would otherwise be a bad experience.

they'll all be running about sayin things like " what a good chap that daft is! he spend all the money just so I wouldn't get caught out by buying a gaylander"

or

" look dear, see how much i saved by not buying a gaylander!!!! and its all thanks to daft!"

It'll be interesting to see how many freelanders are left from the first few years of manufacture in another 10 or 15 years. I reckon there'll come a point where all the modern Land Rovers become uneconomical to repair.

1987 td90 £600 just had to weld A new rear crossmember on,

Still to do
fit new brake shoes & pads to front and rear brakes. and handbrake.
Buy new pistons and seals for front callipers.
Change Rear Propshaft
Change rear door for new one.
change front doors for series doors with sliding windows.

With the exception of the brake pistons, seals and Handbrake shoes all the other parts were included in when I bought the landy. obviously there are a few bolts and nuts to replace as well as the usual service items. But I reckon £200 max will see it mot'd.
The chassis has never been welded and is still solid except for the rear crossmember. I very much doubt that anyone buying a 20 year old gaylander will be able to say that.
