Why can't we call them "trucks"?

So most of us know that we can't call our Landy's "truck's". It's clearly frowned upon amongst Landy enthusiasts and you will be laughed at by them if you use the term "truck" when referring to a Landy or similar... Yet most Americans call their 4x4s "trucks" and it's perfectly acceptable/normal over there. Nobody would think anything of it. Do the same over here and people would think you've lost the plot. But the question is, why?

We need a better general term to describe 4x4s. "four by four" is too much of a mouthful when said aloud. "car" isn't really very accurate and "Landy" isn't general enough. What about those who drive slittys? Most people in the UK don't know what a "SUV" is and you can hardly call a 90 a "SUV" anyway! So what can we use as a general term to describe them? Trucks are generally perceived to be big and powerful and designed to haul stuff. That's cool, no? So why don't we just call them trucks?!

"truck1 [truhk] Show IPA
noun
1.
any of various forms of vehicle for carrying goods and materials, usually consisting of a single self-propelled unit but also often composed of a trailer vehicle hauled by a tractor unit.
2.
any of various wheeled frames used for transporting heavy objects."

What mine doesn't like being called is IT

Defenders have personality and therefore should be a he or she :p:eek:

Although I wouldn't care if people had called my Disco IT, I called it a lot worse

I sometimes call it a truck, sometimes a car and sometimes, that ####in old bitch. when it doesn't work.
