HI, just noticed a whining noise under bonnet, not too loud but seems to be coming from water pump or alternator, is there anything else that could whine under there.(My wife could but theres no chance of gettin her under the car!!).
Thanks

most probably alternator but it is possible it's water pump. Sounds like you have a bearing on the way out.

i have a whining noise also when i drive, ive just replaced my noisy tires with quieter ones and so can now notice it and every time i accelerate i can hear this wierd whiney noise. it stops if i ease off the accelerator or dip the clutch. ps the noise isnt there when stationary. what can it be?

Mines doing that at the mo' thought it was the alternator as i could hear the bearings when i did the screwdriver test so replaced it with a new one and the noise is still there so it's the water pump.
That's gonna get done asap and might as well do the timing belt while the pumps off.

Is there a grating noise aswell? coz it could be your prop shaft as it stops when you press the clutch or stationary.

Sorry its a 96 300tdi disco.she whines all the time,so does the disco! even in neutral at a standstill, i will check it out today
Thanks

You're not on about a constant fan belt squeal are you? If you are, loosen off the tensioner pulley bolt and insert a 1p piece or small washer in the 9 o' clock position behind it and then re-tighten the pulley. It should shut it up. Or you can spend £75 on a new pulley every 6 months.

i got a whine from my 300 as well...

had previously done the penny trick. but the tensioner bearing seems loose again, dont think the whine is the alternator as its only a couple of months old.

Just ordered an new tensioner bearing off ebay, this will be the second one this year.

its only a fiver, so i'm trying the cheap bits first.... I'm just hoping it's not the turbo bearings!!

will let you know if this solves the whine
