Have searched (honest!) and looked for photos on google and parts websites but failed!

1994 300 TDi Defender with discs all round - how do I tell which rear axle I have?

believe there are two:

FTC3688 and FTC3974 which is badged as 'heavy duty'

Does heavy duty = salisbury?

Many thanks again

Yours truly is planning for the worst and looking up part numbers in readiness James

Yep - numbers relate to Defender 90 axles - was curious how you tell the 'standard' and 'heavy duty' axles apart

As you'll know, the diff assembly is either FTC3272 for the standard, or FTC785 for the Heavy Duty

Pretty sure mine will be the standard fit, but wanted to be able to double check

Is there a visual way to tell the two apart - don't fancy my chances finding a stamped part number on the current one!

there is only std and 4 pin fitted in some military but bearings are the same 539707 ,539706,rtc3095 carrier brgs frc8220 seal

Stronger center stronger rear shafts. Most used for comps and comp safari racing. Quite rare to find a good s/h one because they are snapped up quickly. Ashcroft sell their own version tho. Many people spin up opposite wheels and break te cross pin and or planet gears. a 4 pin has 2 extra planet gears and they all share the load still not unbreakable but certainly a huge improvement if you have to give your mota some stick offroad. I have fitted a salisbury rear axle to my 90 because it has a far bigger diff centre 4 pin and it has a hypoid diff which increases strength no end. Reliability over slight ground clearance penalty.

Interesting thread!

Could you tell me which prop shaft you fitted to your 90 with a salisbury axle?
I am fitting one onto my re build.

Thanks
