Looking at getting an older Disco 2 with about 100,000miles on it.
Which gearbox is more reliable, Manual or Auto?

I would like a Auto as i do around 75-80k a year for work ( not in the disco!!) so would like a slush mattic for the weekends.

Will also be doing a bit of "light" off roading aswell.

Trick question :)

It depends on the abuse they have had for the last 100k miles. My personal preference is for a slushbox because I am a lazy bastid. Many will argue that the manual gives better control in the rough stuff.

I would say go for an auto D2. They are great on-road and off-road. Do loads of miles with ease. Reduces mpg by perhaps 10%

No clutches (manual variety) to worry about, just make sure you have good clean oil in.

Thanks for the advice, will try and get an Auto then, which is what i wanted.

Before committing to spend money it would make sense to test-drive both don't you think? Make sure that you are hapy with the auto?

Bear in mind these vehicles weigh about 2250kgs, so the effects of the slip from the Torque Converter are noticeable especially on take-off and below 52mph (the TC lock-up speed).

It would be worth taking the time to try both - then buy an auto, in the full knowledge that you did your market research properly :D:D;)

In view of the "light offroading" comment, might I suggest a set of General Grabber AT² tyres - very good on-road with good long-term durability and excellent off-road for green laning.

Hi Mike, congratulations on the new car, I'm sure you'll love it. Once you have it there are various mods and service items that would be worth looking into.

Good luck with your op by the way.

Looking forward to seeing some piccies of the new toy :D:D:cool:;)

Cheers
Dave
