I've been offered a 300tdi for 3.5k its a greenish colour and its auto, it looks clean enough no mot though so I'm wondering is it worth a punt. I sold my last 300tdi 4 years ago it was rotten, what the autos like? my last was manual. i live in wales so with this 20mph nonsense. would that have any effect on an auto box? I've retired so got some time to play with a disco, i think ive sold my classic mini so hopefully i would pay cash whats your thought s please, I would use the disco as a daily driver tbh

I have no idea about the disco.
But if your last 1 was rotten what makes you think this will be any better?
No MOT check its history?

My D1 has done just 48k miles but after 26 years the body looks a bit weathered in the usual places as it been sitting outside, but the chassis is ok never requiring welding or any were else underneath, someone offered me a grand last November he must had a tipoff as it just got its new mot certificate, but i’m happy with it as it carries stuff what my other car can’t.

As for the 300Tdi automatic, the auto gearbox never suited the diesel… so its been told over the years.
The 1996MY onwards D1 had EDC fitted by LR to boost the power up to 120BHP to increase acceleration of the 300Tdi auto, but still road tested at 18 seconds ☹️

At 20 mph I expect the gearbox will be still in second, there are different change points for the petrol engine, so could be the same or may be not, I don't drive at 20 mph very often, there’s info on this in the work shop manual I believe.

I can’t believe that someone would try selling a vehicle without a MOT certificate 🤔

If it was rotten, your last one, you know where to look.
Without an MOT that price is a bit jocular. I'd be tempted to ask the guy to put it through one anyway and then look at what it failed on. It might not be bad.
Deffo put the reg number through the Gov.uk Mot history thing to see how it has done over the years.

Too much money for an old motor without an MOT.
I don't think driving an auto slowly will do it any harm.
Bear in mind that the running costs of a Disco will be considerably more than a classic Mini. They aren't eligible for Historic reg yet, so no classic insurance. Insurance and VED rising fast for 4wds. Do your sums carefully.

My auto D1 has 52k on it, and is clean. We mainly use it for towing our caravan, it doesn't like hills with the caravan.
What year is your mini, anything after 1983, will still have to pay for tax/mot.
I don't think you will have any issues with the auto box at 20, it will just do it's thing

yep i know all, the bad points on them, and the leaks problems, gov I have a look at and also been look at x mod 90.s and 110.s so might go for one of them, i dont want another rot box tbh

Tis such a shame.
I have 2 D1s and a D2.
The Ds rusty in the body, the D2 rusty in the chassis, and the lectronix is such a pain.
Maybe one fine day I'll put the D2 body on one of the D1 chassis!
Petrol or 300tdi?

I'll have to give it some thought!!

But a local indy assures me it can be done.;)

Late 300 auto with EDC with an auto means the throttle pedal just becomes an on /off switch, the throttle response is psis poor, but if you chip them they bloody fly, enough to shame a standard d2.

The D2 is the more rust prone of the two, D2's go in both the body and chassis, in my experience atleast.

I see a disco 2 recently for sale. How it had an MOT on it is beyond me.
Absolute swiss cheese for a body and the frame wasn't much better...
My series 1 disco is much better.
Yeah bulkhead around the bonnet hinges and the floors rot out with the swiss cheese paper thin crap chassis...

Lovely cars, great drive but far too rot prone for my liking, i do miss mine apart from the rust... ;)

Dragged a few to the scrapper over the years
Them bluddy chassis on the discovery 2 are rubbish

Unless you crash it, when it disintegrates around you.

eye widening, don't think about it when you're driving it...

Same for my Nan and her classic mini obsession, had them for 50yrs never thought about how much of a death trap they were/are, fold like a paper cup when crashed.
