Which Diesel is best?

Reading through these forums I see a few threads on Shell diesel is best and some say they see no difference between any of them, also BP is rubbish (got sea water in it...lol).
I use BP as collect nectar points but happy to move away if I have to.
Most companies do a regular diesel and a super diesel, I never use the super as it is feckin pricey but I can't help wondering if it is better for power and MPG and therefore worth paying more for.

What do you use and why and lets see if we can get a common fuel that comes out on top?

I use bio, 85p per litre duty paid. One of my customers has a catering suppies business and has invested in a proper bio diesel plant, currently making over 3 tonnes a week. Pity I'm always craving chips though.

I use which ever is cheapest, usually Sainsbury's locally currently at £1.28

If I see one of the main ones such as Esso, BP, Shell matching them then I fill up there. Texaco are locally one of the dearest!!!

I know some guys recommend putting in fuel treatment once in a while but wonder if, in the long run, its just as expensive to fill with the 'Extra' diesel....

why not make your own comparison with the choices you have available in your area.

Becuase to try them all will take months and I thought it would be interesting to get some opinions.

red diesel is best lol,personally i allways try to use shell,i use there v-power petrol in my subaru impreza and there is a noticable power difference,i use there normal diesel in my 90 and allways seem to get better mpg,dont think the v-power diesel would make much of a difference in the 90 (200tdi)as i think its more for high performance engines but who knows

Grr, I started a similar thread on this and didn't notice this one!

My problem is that I now only have a choice of either Jet or Tesco (BP closed down here) and I can't decide! Last time I used Jet fuel, the gaylander seemed gutless BUT it was back in early December when the temperature was very cold.

id just try them both and see which fuel it runs best on,but personally i dont think the fuels great from either but thats just my opinion

i don't notice any difference between Esso/Shell/Shell VPower/or ASDA - refuse to use Sainsburys due to the miserable and arrogant staff that work there... BP garage close to me is about 4-5p per litre more expensive (why do anyone use these garages that cost sooo much more???)

The thing to remember is that the engine in a Landrover isn't the pinnacle of diesel technology so fuels will make less of a difference than they would in a newer/sportier car.
I have a Disco 300tdi and it doesn't really matter what diesel i put in it the only time I can really tell the difference is when I run it on Bio.
But my wife has an Ibiza FR Tdi and that really responds well to shell extra diesel.

i find shell to be the best on my 2004 td4,no diesel knock/rattle compared to the supermarket fuels,morrisons,asda and tesco only in my area,and tesco is always 1p more a litre than any of the others,even shell.as regards to v-power diesel ithink the only diference is extra cleaning aditves acording to there website

Personally, I don't use any of the supermarket fuels, after all they are just supermarkets trying to get there sticky fingers in my wallet by any means! They aren't fuel specialists, like bp, esso, jet etc.
I use the standard jet fuel most of the time, with every 2nd tank getting a shot of millers. Not sure it makes a huge difference, but it makes me feel better.

the fuel that goes to supermarkets is exactly the same as that which goes to premium filling stations. Do you see any Sainsbury's or tesco oil platforms ??? or an Asda refinery ??The ONLY difference is how it's stored at the pumps. there is a brand new Sainsbury's station near to me and I've fuelled up there with no issues but while I was out and about I had to put some in at a Morrisons that's been there for a few years now and I did notice a bit of chugging.
I would say that the condition of the underground fuel tanks has more to do with the quality of fuel than the place you get it from

although the fuel comes from the same places its the additves, or lack of,which is the difference between supermarket and top brand fuels.

Total for me over supermarkets any day, can feel the difference and miles per tank.

dont know about mpg but engine smoother and less noisy.anyway why pay same price for supermarket fuel when top brand fuel is the same price?[atleast it is in my area.apart from tesco which is always 1p more than anyone else.]

Just because Tesco/Asda etc. don't seem to specialise in fuel don't take them to be stupid.

They have Very deep pockets and can afford the specialists in any field.

I worked for an oil manufacturer a while ago, they made oil for several supermarkets and thier own brand. A well known supermarkets policy was "we want an oil of this specification, with these additives in this quantity, in these bottles at this price", "ring us when you can do it - but don't wait too long".

They knew exactly what they wanted, and what they believed the market would stand.
Not the best quality - but not rubbish either.

Never had any probs running on stuff from the super markets.
that was a Rover Diesel Freelander and now TD5 Disco. Even when they had that scare last year / year before, where they had that contaminated Fuel, I think there was a couple of the bigger independent caught up in that as well if I remember.
