Where this come from

Hi all I,ve being doing my headgasket today, now while taking the topend apart I came across some debris in the gas exchange. It was a wire mesh and some bits of plasic. Now the question is where have they come from as I can't see where, also what importance are they. Oh it's a 3.9 V8i thanks in advance steve

Mass Air Flow - works out how much air is going into the engine and can work out fueling stuff etc... Its for the EDC/ECU.
 
I may be way out of the ballpark... MAF - mass air flow.. they go pop when you get backfires apparently.. and are in the air intake so if it disintegrated could end up in yer motor somehere
 
And what are the implications of this not bein there anymore. It being running fine just the headgasket had gone. Didn't have any loss of power just the gasket had split on piston one (dont know what caused it). And wheres best to get one cheap.

no idea if that's what it is.. i was just throwing in ideas ready for someone more knowledgeable to come in with their ideas... but this is part of the fuel system:

Cheers mjltigger and everyone else bet it happened when I was low on gas when I first brought it and it backfired. Does anyone know of a LR breakers in the Stoke on Trent area Steve. I may start a new thread
