here is something to be aware of ,, dont get caught out ,,

the other night , while driving in the new forest i picked up somthing in my rear tyre, tore a hole in the rubber,,i pulled over luckly into a layby,

it was pitch black, and i didnt have a torch, problem number 1

i used my phone as a light source, anyways i set about changing the tyre, slackened off the wheel studds and jacked it up,,,,,studds out, but the wheel was stuck to the hubb,it wouldnt budge,, i put the studds back in loose, and jumped on the wheel kicked it pulled it , scratched my head, umm gave it a real big kick several times ,,BANG,,, it fell off the jack , but at least it freed off the wheel,

1,carry a torch , (i bought one you shake to charge it up )
2, make sure you put a smeer of grease around the wheel hubbs, alloy wheels ,they really hold on tight ,
3, and watch out for the jack supplied with the freelander ,, , its crapp

Took me two hours to the front right wheel off my Disco 2 at 15 months / 18,000 miles.

So I took ALL the wheels off one after the other, coppergreased the hubs and studs, and put them all back properly.

New cars are assembled with all dry nuts and bolts.
So the water gets in first time it rains.
So everything rusts up solid.
So stealers charge you for stuck time.

What a racket.

YEP GOOD ADVICE. . . .copper slip is the correct stuff ,dunt go mad wiff it just er smidge on studs un work it in and hub face , un yes always carry a torch int motor , i always have a gerber multi tool on my rhs it will smash windows un cut through seat belts , years ago i was confronted with a car that had smashed into a truck on er narrow b road, the women passenger was stuck inside the car , it took me ages to smash the glass as all the doors was wedged and as she was slumped to the side could not undo the seat belt [had to get er out as front of motor was er small fire] , lucky the lorry driver had a knife. . . .bout five mins after we got er out the car caught alight good un proper . . . . .since that day i always carry my gerber int motors. . . .mings tip of the year:) :) :)

Yup ..... Maglite and Knife, and in the back a bloody big fire extinguisher.
Oh yes, and a big towrope, yellow beacon flasher, and a plastic crate full of goodies.

You can tell I drive a Disco - it's all the stuff I reckon that's needed to rescue ME!

By the way, I have some HUNDREDS of fifteen foot lengths of polyproplene ropes - black - white - some blue - red - that can be spliced into great towropes and recovery kit.

For £1 each plus the postage I can part with them

I have an account with TNT and could get at least 30 or 40 shipped for £15 anywhere in UK overnight. What about it you cross-country kids - why not order a big boxful of these ropes. It's easy to splice eyes on the ends, but I'm not doing them all.

Please don't ask why I bought them.
It seemed like the thing to do at the time.

Top tip CharlesY......Are you splicing the ropes yourself? Not an easy skill to carry out

While we are on the topic of emergency kit, heres some of the things in my emergency bag.

High vis vest

Life Hammer

LED head light and torch,

Several years back 4 guys drowned in a car when it plunged into a river. They couldnt get out, a simple life hammer would have smashed the window and cut the belts

dont go for the maglite torches, they have had their day, battery drains in no time at all. The beam is just as bright in these new generation LED's and last for so much longer. If I hold the button on the headlight and then let go, it flashes SOS in morse code continuously, if I have to summon for help.

Here's an idea: Why not remove the cigar lighter from the car (useless item for those that don't smoke) and replace with a small torch such as those fitted to the VW Touareg. I have, it's a very useful addon

Neat!

So for us members who do not have deep pockets how much are they going to set you back?

Does it charge on the 12v auxillary socket?

iirc it's approx £20-25 a pop and yes it charges on the socket permanent on VW and seamingly switched on LRs so will only charge whilst key switched to at least pos 1

ME? Would I do that?

But if anyone wants a box of 15 foot ropes over an inch diameter just let me know.

Cheap.

Easy to splice ends on ..
