Hi guys
Sorry there is no "introduce yourself" yet. I am on LR4x4 and LRO but I have had no joy with my enquiries
I have just become the owner of a 12 plate D4. I had a series 3 for 15 years. I built it from the ground up starting with a heavy duty military chassis, any way she has gone now. I am getting too old and miserable to spend the time underneath to keep her going. I used to use her on a shooting estate taking my dogs and several others around the grounds picking up after several well heeled chaps had done the business with their purdeys and the like. I would like to do the same with the new lady. There will be places where the going will get somewhat challenging so I would like to get a second set of wheels with something chunky on that I can put on for just such days so that it,or I, don't look a complete t@*t when the going gets sloppy.
My question is how?? are there any wheels out there that will fit a D4 and will take something like a chunky khumo. I had these on the old girl and they never let me down. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Phil

IMO no need for chunky tyres on a D4, it's management is so complex and well made that it will get you going in any terrain with a decent set of A/Ts or if it gets stuck with those it would get stuck even with simex, other dimension or much different profile tyres than those recommended will mix up the management and do more harm than benefits, just learn well the driving techniques described in the owner's handbook and you'll not look t@*t at all

in september i was present at a trial in our mountins where the winner was a D3 on factory fitted wheels while mud, rocks, steep inclines, sharp curves and tuned Defenders and D1's on huge tyres were involved

Thanks for that. Makes a lot of sense. I had been warned that a size change would confuse it. I had run my size through the conversion equations and was looking for something like a 70/75 ish profile on 16/17's, thinking that the deeper tyre would give added protection as well as flexibility. When you see the size of the discs and calipers it is obvious that this is NOT an option. I guess it would be a good idea to spend some time with somebody "who can" learning what the new lady "can do" I have been fortunate in that I have spent time with landrovers in a working environment and have had to put them through their paces but there wasn't the refinements or technology on them back then. Also another look at Clarkson in the RR sport on the tank testing ground speaks volumes about the capabilities of these motors in their "Chelsea tractor" format.

just a flavour with standard tyres

as i said i've seen one in action on a more "complicated" terrain than that and if you know how to drive IMO it it's unstopable
