225/60/17 is a good compromise, and looks well proportioned in the arch.
There's mine on the 17" Trek rims, with 225/60/17 Maxxis 771 AT tyres. The proportions work well with this size.

A 235 really needs to be on a 7½" rim as a minimum, but an 8" rim would be better. This is to maintain support in the side walls.
The grip difference between 225 and 235 is negligible, so there's no real loss going for the 225. The 225 will give better turn in, as the side wall will be straighter, and have more support as a result.

There's nothing wrong with 15" wheels, but they do look a bit narrow in my eyes, and the Freelander definitely does ride and handle progressively better with each extra inch of wheel 16" is better than 15", 17" is better than 16" and 18" are better 17" wheels, 18" wheels is by far the best for handling available, with better turn in, and best braking too.

In that case 225/60/17 in something like Yokohama Geolander AT 015 or Maxxis Bravo 771, will achieve what you're after.
