Want to attatch a spare wheel to my 110 Defender Soft Top Tailgate. I know theres lots of swing away carriers that will work but are there any carriers that would swing down with the tailgate so I could fit long lengths of timber or whatever in the back with tailgate down and still drive rather than a swing to the side carrier? I thought maybe I could bolt a Disco 1 carrier onto the tailgate but I guess the hinges would be to weak. Any ideas?

Guess your right, thought someone may have tried the idea out. Dont really fancy the spare flying of down the road and one bent tailgate!!

my m8 still used a swingaway on his tailgate

There are several types available for drop-down tailgates that work in a similar way to the ones that attach to the safari-door (i.e they hinge on a bracket bolted to the cross-member and are supported at the top by a bracket on the rear capping). The non-hinged end is secured by the tailgate antiluce clip (the up & over catch).

This one is sold by Safari Equip. Land Rover Defender Rear Tailgate Wheel Carrier but there are others available which follow the same pattern.

Of course there is the good old Pivlock carrier made by Bullivant Engineering which is ideal for tailgates Bullivant Engineering :- Makes of Pivlock. This carrier or a copy is sold by Paddock (Part No. PM287).
I fitted a Pivlock original to my S111 SWB V8 about 25-years ago and it carried my 9.00x16 spare for many years without any problems. This model also locks in the open position so no problems holding the spare-wheel out of the way when parked on a hill. They work well with a safari rear door but as the locking mechanism is on the bottom pivot point it means that anyone inside the vehicle can't get out single handed. This of course isn't a problem with a tailgate.
