Hi all

At the mow the spare is mounted on the front of Milly which looks a bit odd, I'm thinking of buying a carrier that fits to the back but needs to be the drop down tailgate type not the door type, has anyone fitted one? are they any good? do they work properly? does anyone have any pictures of one fitted? I’ve got a Mantec one in my garage awaiting fitting, bought from eBay. The biggest benefit is that it takes the weight off of the rear door, saving it from damage. The ORE 4x4 one looks good but at a price!
 
I have a Mantec one from many years ago. Works really well. Takes the strain off the door and hinges and never caused any problem.
The only issue that I had was that I ordered rear light protectors at the same time and the ones on the right wont fit as the wheel contacts them when its one. Not a big issue, but be aware.

I know it is devise but it looks like you already have the bonnet fixings to bonnet mount it (profile pic). I have a bonnet mounted spare on my series and although it does limit the view a little it is not as much as some people make out and you soon get used to it. Also the lifting the bonnet is not a problem if you are using standard 7.50 or equivalent tyres. if you have larger rubber fitted then this option is probably not suitable.

I would also question the need for a carrying a spare. I carry one as I have a swing away but I cannot remember the last time I actually needed to fit the spare on the road. Again depending on what you have in the back you can get bulkhead mounting kits. I have one in my series but it is a swb so is small enough with out a wheel in the back as well. may be worth looking into as they are easy to fit an not expensive. I have just fitted a bulkhead mount kit to the front of my sankey trailer to carry a spare. Although I stand by the not having needed a spare, the sankey is on tubes so if I do get a puncture there is no making it home before it it is properly flat.
 
Cheers for all your input folks, I think to start with I'm gunna sling it in the back and look at the different options there is available, an alarm is the highest priority at the mow, hopefully I will collect Milly mole (cause of it's long nose) on Saturday from Craddocks in Cannock.

Why carry a spare ?
Have you ever needed one ?
Would a puncture kit have got you going ?

Not sure what 'Milly' is but I presume an FFR/military 90 so could you not fix your spare to the tubs bulkhead ?

Milly is a civilian 90 made to look like a military wolf after a big ground up rebuild, excuse for being thick as I'm very new to landies (apart from the last crock of **** I bought which was sold very quickly) but what is the "tubs bulkhead"? is that behind the seats?

For the jack and wheel brace get yourself a cheap 3ft breaker bar and socket and a discovery bottle jack (the red Land Rover one) these for behind the seat between the seat back and tub bulkhead.

The tub bulkhead is the sheet of aluminium at the front of the tub (rear lower body section) that the back of the seats rest against.

That’s where my spare is currently. I got the swing-away carrier so that I can get my bike inside the 90 more easily.
 
I’ve just removed mine from the back door and that’s where it will be going. The door is in the garage as we speak awaiting multiple cracks in the frame being repaired.
Oh dear, there's a lot of weight really in one wheel/tyre to hang off alloy, might re-think my thoughts on hanging it on the back, will deffo look at the possibility of the bonnet mount or the tubs bulk head fitment, or might just chuck it in the shed and lock the door :p
 
When I repaired my back door some years ago I fitted a checker plate back, stiffens the door a lot.

Unless you need the rear tailgate to be drop down for carting extended loads now and then converting it to side opening linked to swing away carrier is a good answer. Someone may have a pic of this set up. Keep an eye on the Ebay carriers for sale.
