Had changed my wheels to a different set of off road ones, did all the wheel nuts up tightly (using scaffolding bar for extra leverage). Then half a mile down the road the back left wheel flew off and over took me! Scared the ****e out of me. Anyway i cant work out what caused it to come off!? the nuts were deffinately done tightly. The only thing i can think of is if the threads on them sheered off, is this likely to have happened??

Luckily it didn't damage car too much, just ripped wheel arch off and scuffed bottom of drum brake.

you plank

you dont need a scaf bar, you dont even need the extention on a standard wheel brace.

I agree with pikey, stripped threads. check all the others before you go anywhere.

hahaha, sorry , yes the vibration will undo an over tightened nut better than anything , they should only be done with a bar of no more than 24" long using only the weight of your upper body , if that makes sense , the torque if i remember right is steel 108 nm alloys 130 hd steels 170, ah kno people dont use a torque ratchet to do the nuts up but it is worth checking, i had a trailer do the exact same thing as the previous user did what you did, glad that it wasnt worse

Damn, i look like an idiot now! haha. it sounds like i over tightened nuts then, although at the time i thought i was being careful not to! I took off alloy wheels wiv tyres which were about 235's i think on 17 inch wheels. and put on 33, 8, 16 kumho venturers on steel rims. The steel nuts had the tapered edge inwards.

It gave me a right old shock seeing the wheel over take me down the road! My original wheels are back on it now because didn't have any more steel wheel nuts. Is there any less obvious damage i should look for?

Change the wheel studs ASAP otherwise it will happen again

It ripped half of the wheel arch off and scuffed bottom of drum brake. Wheel arch is now bottled back on so surprisingly alryt. Any ideas where i can get new studs from, I have tried googling but couldnt find anything. (my car is a 1987 defender 2.5td) Cheers.
