I have driven my totally standard landy through water that came up to the height of the bonnet.
Luckily i had been on an offroad driving day the week before and remembered about the bow wave thing, my son was in the passenger seat almost crappin himself

I guess were talking with full wading kit fitted and not a standard defender with the it intake on the side of the wing?

me mates bobtail disco..

bow wave thing is fine..

but you must have been foolish to take a standard defender into water not knowing its depth and knowing that you have no snorkel or other modifications to allow for deep wading.

if the bottom suddenly became boggy or got deeper and you lost traction ,the air intake is on the side of the wing and would be submerged and would end up sucking in water and fookin the engine

if you look at the 2nd pic ive posted of me mates green 90,this is totally modded to the max and has arb diff lockers 38" super swamper tyres

the water looked fine and if you look at the water level its about bonnet level which is what your sayin you went thru,he went in and then the bottom got boggy and the tyres sank and he was goin knowhere..

filled up his cab to the height of his cubby box..

imho always insure you have the correct modifications/precautions in place if anything goes wrong.

over the bonnet in me lifted 110, no snorkel. The engine had a drink and blew its self apart.Bastid!

myself and gibbo phil took our 90's through a local ford water was up to my bollix but we were still floating bloody tyres even with a transfer box and all my tools in the back it was bobbing i have a picture of phil going in but it was very dark bad phone pic somwhere Jai

Hi, whats the bow wave thingy I should know about, havnt been deep yet but am waiting for the right moment. Also my Defender 90 200tdi has a safari snorkel on it but when i put my hand over the top with just the pipe bit sticking up and no cap on the engine still runs and it sucks in air from the outside part of the snorkel (the bit that attaches to the side of the left wing).

Thanks Terra Dog

Done it to bonnet in 90. The prob if you dont have full wading kit is that if you are lucky, you get through. Issue then is the water floating around you bits (car bits that is). I did this a year ago and the transfer box was the cost of my foolishness.

around 4ft I think. I had a bow wave, but there was so much water it soon disapeared and i was left bobbing left to right as the tyres found traction. Lucky the river was not in full flow and lucky it was a short distance. The water crept up a few inches from the bottom of my window just before I climbed out the otherside.

Done the same crossing in my V8 lightweight last weekend and it was deeper than it looked, I fooking bricked it as we were on our tod and the leaf springs struggled to find traction on the rocky bottom :D got out still on all 8 cylinders.

Just over the bonnet in mine with about 5"-6" of water inside! would love to have a go at this (in the summer :D) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qr8eEWyKQHM"]YouTube- Farley quarry 20/5/07 suzuki sj water[/ame]

In the Military Wolf variant, they have a removable panel in the canvas roof for the driver to poke his head out of.
A mate in the army has driven one in water with literally only an inch of windscreen frame showing. He said the oddest thing was that he had to guess where all the contols were - while half standing/floating inside the cab, with his head out of the "Sunroof", holding himself "Down" to the steering wheel to stop him floating too far away from the pedals...
Sounded fun in a strange kind of suicidal way...
