I do like the Tdi's.... but the Td5 makes way more power and a better noise and returns as good or better fuel economy. Makes the Tdi seem somewhat redundant tbh.

3.9 EFI NAS spec V8 would likely have got my vote or even a 2.8i S. African straight 6. 3.5 carb drinks way too much for it's torque and HP output to be in with a chance.

Really? Never seen a TD5 which returns better economy than a Tdi.
Most people report around 25mpg for their TD5s, whereas 30 is standard for a Tdi, and 35+ is not unheard of.

Not sure how that would make the Tdi redundant, anyway :confused:

Wouldn't want to work on a TD5 either, too complicated and way too much electronics going on for the home mechanic.

My Uncles D2 Td5 is better on fuel than his 300Tdi 90, or my 200Tdi Disco.

Yeah, they are so so scary..... :eek: almost like working on any other car produced in the past 25-30 years :rolleyes: ;) way too complex for a home mechanic. :biggrin1:
 
I jest by the way. I love Tdi's, currently on my 3rd. But it doesn't mean dynamically a Td5 isn't better. And come on, complex - yeah right. Exactly how are they more complex than a 1.8i K-Series, a 2.4 TDCI, an EFI Rover V8, a Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, etc etc

Well Matey I'm with Langers on this one!

I have a TD5 and a 200tdi Def, and the 200tdi will beat the TD5 for better fuel consumption all day every day.

Although I realy do like the TD5, the 200tdi is better to work on (more room) no electrickery, easy to get going again when need be, and hence the reason it's the one that's takeing us to Morocco this summer.

I reckon your uncles pulling your leg :D
 
definately tdi, td5 and v8 more power worse fuel economy ,both 200 and 300 tdi reliable (apart from 300 rad) simple and cheap to rebuild and yet reasonably powerful,enough for any job,if you was going around the world they would be engine of choice

No way a TD5 should do more mpg than a Tdi, not if both are standard vehicles. I personally get a regular 32mpg out of my 200 Tdi, and that's in a 110, running 50/50 veg oil!

Unless you have massive mud tyres etc, 19mpg is way too low, even if you are thrashing it around. I would suggest you look into what could be causing that, because it should be giving you 27-28 at the bare minimum. If it's standard that is.

There is no denying the fact that a Tdi is a far easier and far more forgiving beast to work on than a TD5 - it's just simple plain fact and accepted by the vast majority.

And I still fail to see how any of this makes the Tdi redundant. The TD5 only does one thing better than the Tdi and that's produce more power. Perhaps you should look into the meaning of the word? :rolleyes::D

Maybe you are correct. I'm not sure the mpg difference is huge though and in fairness the D2 Td5 makes what 20% more power than a 300Tdi.

Yep, the Disco was on big mud tyres. In fairness touring it'd do 24 maybe even 26mpg. Round home though much more like 21-22mpg, 19 was an all time low.

Nope nothing wrong with it. My 300Tdi D90 used to regularly average 21-23mpg, but I admit I did thrash it.

27-28mpg I suspect you'd need to be on the on the less than enthusiastic style of driving. Not saying many won't achieve this, but I know I'm unlikely too.

Have to say, it always amazes me how Landy owners are so scared of ECU's. It might be accepted by the vast majority...... but I think it needs a sub text though.

As in, anyone who really can work and strip a Tdi, will actually be more than capable of doing so to a Td5. They both require a level of competence and understanding.

As said before, how is a Td5 anymore complex than a 3.9 EFI? People seem to work on V8's at home with no bother.

Not redundant as an engine to use. Just redundant when a poll is asking for the best.

If you say the Tdi is better because its simple to work on. Then automatically a 2.25 petrol or diesel beat a Tdi as both are less complex again.
 
have a td5 and a 200tdi and i found the td5 maybe a tad better on fuel (well the way i drive um anyway) the 200tdi is a great engine , and the td5 makes me smile every time i give it some welly (sound and power :D) love um both .
must say though if money was not a problem would love to get a td5 fender for off-roading/laning :D
 
200 is perfect for what power it delivers for its simplicity,rebore new pistons a few shell brgs = new engine ,1 wire to run,td5 v8 power but not in same 4x4 league,ecu ,no rebore etc
