Just completed a 7000 kilometer trip down to Morocco and across the Sahara in a 24 year old 110 Defender with the original 200 tdi engine. It never missed a beat. Just needs an oil change, door locks need adjusting and a couple of new tires at its ready to go again.
200tdi gets my vote.

Got any pictures of the trip?

200tdi - thats what I have and if I even began thinking one of the others was better then I would end up spending more money I don't have!!! So I'm sticking with 200tdi.

Oh and I like the fact its running sweet on 80% straight veg oil and starting perfect in this cold weather!!! Frequent oil + filter changes though!

I'm probably in a minority here but I quite like my 19J  OK so a lot of the old ones tended to go bang but I think they've all died by now. Later ones are fine if looked after and properly maintained- if you don't service it and wait for it to go wrong then of course it's going to.

Parts such as injectors are cheaper than those for tdi/td5 engines, around 24mpg, the turbo gives it just a bit more power than a NA to make it usable, and it will plod along happily at 65-ish all day.

Good 200tdi engines are getting older and harder to find nowadays as the supply of rusty discos has pretty much dried up, so I'll be keeping mine standard :)

I’ve had 200 and 300 tdi in discos from new, great engines but too coarse for discos out of the showroom when compared to their competitors at the time shogun and trooper. Perfect for defender though, my 200 was main dealer serviced it’s whole life and was going strong at 250k when sold.
