I always thought that diesel were better vehicles but now my other half has talked us into get a range rover vogue 4.4 petrol it's a 53 plate and has done just under 80000 miles, I'm really not sure ifs it's a good buy or not And would really appreciate some knowledge on the matter! Thanks in advance

My preference would always be for a diesel, more economical and diesel is a fair bit cheaper than petrol in wher I live in France. With all the HG failures and slipped liners on the V8's, I have to say the diesel is also likely to be more reliable despite a few cracked heads.

Is that a real question? What is more economical a 4.4 petrol or a 3.0 diesel?! Really?

Anyway in terms of ownership its 6 and two 3s, the 4.4's are more powerful and sound nicer, and their gearboxes seem to be more solid. The 3.0's will be under powered but more fuel efficient, but seem to have a few more engine/running gear problems.

Overall, good cars, but you need to budget for some savage repair/servicing costs if you are going to keep it for any length of time.

To voguegly yes it was a serious question I guess I knew the diesels WERE more economical because of the engine size also I thought diesel would be better But was just unsure now o see the 4.4 should be more powerful, we are not buying it for speed its just for comfort and its automatic, what problems are we likely to encounter with it. (if any) and would it be a good idea to convert it to LPG???

mate, your living in a dream world if you think you are not going to have any problems with these cars! :eek:they can be major headaches if you are not a little mechanically minded. If your looking at getting one check out the long 'before purchase checklist' on my site www.myrangerover.co.uk  (down for an upgrade at the minute will be back up in a bit) i have the 4.4 V8 petrol myself and its a brilliant car but have been in my mates 3.0L diesel (which has had 3 replacement gearboxes in the last few years!!:eek::eek:) and i can say that the 4.4 V8 petrol is 100 times better than the diesel without question!! the diesel just hasn't got enough power to move these beasts!!

Ok the diesel is more eco but who drives a Range Rover who wants economy!! even in my V8 petrol i can get 27-30 mpg on a long run on the motorway :D, ok granted it can get as low as 12-17 round town but you have to remember these cars way not that far off 3 tons!!

Good luck in your search and go for the petrol you will not regret it.:)

I thought it was only the P38 V8s that were prone to thse problems. The 4.4s are a completely different design, aren't they?

they are yes, but them trator drivers dont see past that. for every slipped linner there is a cracked head, or hot start problem. haha let the **** begin..

Slipped liners cracked heads all down to poor maintenance. Diesel engines are FAR FAR FAR more reliable that petrol engines. Is a diesel more economical than a petrol. What a silly question. Of couse it is, every day of the week. Simular silly quesetions are. Is the pope a catholic. Does an hobby horse have wooden dick.

Agreed, the 4.4's are by all accounts fairly solid, its the rest of the car its attached to which causes dramas!

A V8 diesel can roar with the best of um. If it's a sound track you want buy a cheap i pod and link it to the throttle position sensor, through a thousand watt amp and a twelve inch speaker. 13 to the gallon for a nice noise does seem a little extreme. I have a V8 Porsche that sounds better than any Range Rover, but the way it uses an oil field an hour makes my DSE a much better prospect for everyday use.:cool::cool:
