Ok, so the Mrs has said i can spend up to 35k on a newer Rangie, but I'm confused, not only by her generosity (quite clearly she wants something in return), but by the choice! To be fair, she does say now I'm in my 40's I should reward myself!
I love my P38, but it is 15 years old and tired, do i spend money on 'restoration' with maybe a Turner engine and all the wooden bits insider that it hasn't got? Or, do I get myself a shiny newer vOGUE. I've ALWAYS HAD V8's and shudder at the thought of a V8 diesel....but then....
I don't like the Sports far too Chelsea for my taste, so there it is.....what do you think?

I would have thought 35K should get you a 4-5 year old. Maybe a Supercharged???
Take one for a drive & then decide whether your P38 will compare, i doubt very much.
Bear in mind it's going to cost ALOT more in maintainence than your P38.

Assuming you mean a Turner 'top hatted' engine would be a wise choice but not unless your engine has problems already. If you plan on keeping the P38 for a long while then it will certainly be alot cheaper upgrading everything on it but dont expect to see a return on it......p38's just get cheaper by the week.

I love my P38 but if I was in your shoes I'd go for the newer car all day long!!

If you can afford to throw the money away, and probably more, then buy a newish Rangie.
If you honestly like your P38 then bank the money in a savings account and just know that you can tart up and repair it whenever you like without worrying, and get somebody else to do the work.

Best advice is to go and look and test drive them and go from there but dont shy away from the diesel v8's they are very good engines, I prefer the sport over the l322, but then the disco 4 has lots to offer too and they tend to hold there money better than the l322.

A late 2001 p38 with all that extra cash you could afford a referb gearbox rebuilt engine and new air bags when all goes wrong and still have lots of cash left.

For £35K in fact for £25K you can have my lovely 110!, you save £10K and I am even more smily than usual, its a win win all round :)...apart from I love my 110 of course :)

My mate's 2012 L322 TDV8 is a super smooth machine. I'd assume a slightly older one would be much the same.

My business partner has a 2012 sport autobiography....been back to the dealers just about every month. I'd hate to see what the repair costs were if it wasn't under warranty

I don't particularly like P38's so if go for an L322 you could get a damn good one for that amount of money :D or a very new D4 or an incredible defender, I was driving a 2.4 puma last night and I'm in love with it. A bit of money spent on or and they would be simply awesome :)

Supercharged L322. P38s are admirable machines in many ways but 35K would get you in something better. I enjoy my P38 too but if I had 35K to spank on a 'new' car, I'd be looking elsewhere, and frankly what I'd end up with would probably have AMG or Msomething written on the boot. :)

I love my P38 but I decided long ago that once she goes to the great scrapper in the sky I will never touch another Land Rover. I want to get where I'm going in comfort and with minimum fuss, not a "lifestyle" vehicle where the lifestyle consists very largely of lying under it with various fluids dripping in my eye.

All part of the fun;)

Worth looking at an ML63? They're pretty awesome machines.

Edited to add - Used MERCEDES-BENZ M CLASS ML63 5dr Tip Auto NEW SHA... for sale - PistonHeads (Ref 1483334)

Thanks very much for the link, that's some car, but with my theoretical 35K I'd probably go for an E61 M5 or CLS55. I also quite fancy a XJR, but I think that can come later in life. :)

The only 'posh' SUV I'd consider now is another Range Rover. The snob in me demands nothing less. :)

Great thread! I hope the OP finds what he wants, and has a lot of fun in the process.
