OK, just wanted to know what tow rope would be best to keep in the car? I'm not planning of tugging drowned Defenders out of lakes or anything, just if I breakdown it may be useful to have, but also if I come across someone else stuck this winter and can help them out that would be good.

So, my main question is do I go for a static or kinetic rope? I understand kinetic ropes are great for getting people out of ditches as you can use the energy in the rope to help, BUT I've also seen what happens when they 'let go' and really don't fancy a rope through the windscreen/head.

So, am I better with a static rope, just like the AA ones and the like? Also, what weight limit - is 2 tonnes enough or should I be looking at more to safely tow a RRC? Figured you guys in here would know!

Cheers!

Test various types out. Stand on a chair with an orange in your mouth and your dick in a hedgehog, you know the drill. Put rope around your neck and jump. If the rope snaps its not good enough, most RR owners weigh the same as their vehicle.

I can post multiple places too...

let the war commence :D

i think the general consensus from previous arguments is a 24mm twisted rope.

i agree with this, having used all three (strops, ropes, kinetics)

strops are great for winching, but snatch really hard when towing. kinetic stretch real good for a huge pull, but put mega strain on the car.

a twisted rope is nice and boingy, so its gentle to tow with on the road, but its not as dangerous as kinetic.

i had a bridle rope made by these guys, VERY high quality work, and great delivery.

cheers

storm99 - I posted in the wrong section first, thought I was in here rather than the RR forum!

Have gone for a strap for now, but may get a twisted rope later on for offroad use if I need it!

a mate tried to do a big pull on me with a strop, pulled his forged jate ring ouf of his chassis. Strops for lashings and trees, ropes for tugging.

Agreed, but Pro-Comp straps have about the same degree of stretch the a rope has. All the benefit of rope with the compactness of a strop.

I havent tried procomp to be honest so just going by rule of thumb, then the thumb changes lol , always though they cost allot more, bugger only just got a new rope. One thing i have learnt, dont bother with kinetic ropes, no bugger will let you use them anywhere.

As somebody wrote, strops are not the right thing to use in towing. Rope has more give and will not risk pulling out jate rings or eyes. As a tow eye whistled past my ear and through the windscreen I realised KERR rope is`nt a good idea either. 40mm three strand polypropaline will pull a truck but give enough to allow you to get the clutch out,
Dyneema, the new wonder rope has less give than wire, most tugs using it put in a nylon stretcher to absorb shock loading. oh, poly is cheap as chips from a rope manufacturer, me.
