What MPG can you realistically get from a Landy/Disco?

A friend has just bought an L reg Disco, really nice. The manual claims alsorts for the MPG and he reckons 30 on average (A TDI, 2.5 diesel I think).

Does that sound about right?

I want to bin my car and get a Land Rover of some sort - anything reliably above 30mpg (which is the best my 2.0li petrol car will get) would be useful. Is there a Landy which will do this please?

Thank you!

I've got a 94L 200Tdi - reset trip count after last fill-up, did 480 miles, 80 litres of bio diesel went in. So 6 miles/litre, about 27 miles/gallon - 4.55 litres to a UK gallon. My journey to work is down, up, down, up hills though so you'd probably get better mileage than this.

Hope that helps!

200tdi.
i can get 29 point summat, regular. but cannot get above 30mpg. no matter how gentle i am with it. others have managed to get 33mpg. dunno how they do it?
remember a Rangey TD owner getting 35mpg! pretty fantastic that.

TD5, 30mpg, trying not to rev her over 2k and using 1st 3rd 5th instead of 1,2,3,4,5. but this goes out of the window when a pajero is along side me at the lights probably down to about 10mpg :D

94 300 tdi Disco with 158,000 on the clock.
Ive just worked it out 300 miles at 95p per litre =42 litres = 32.47 mpg and my Disco thows out black smoke every time you set off from stand still and every time i put my foot down. Just think how good that would be if i got it fixed.

'96 Disco 300 Tdi with 123k on the clock. I get about 28mpg in everyday use and have had as much as 34mpg on a long run with quite a bit of high speed motorway use.
Driven carefully I can get just over 32mpg in daily use.

My Tdi 300 Auto ('94) only gets about 420 from a full tank, which seems to be less than most of those I've read on here. Is that because its an automatic? Its a bit worrying, especially as it has no EGR fitted (so it should have better performance, right?). The car has only done 104,000 miles, and has a pretty good service history, plus it runs well.

Any ideas, or are my fears regarding fuel economy unfounded?

I haven't had the car long so haven't worked that out up to now. I filled it up, reset the trip meter, and 15 miles after the yellow light came on, it had reached 435 miles, hence the evaluation of 420 miles from a full tank. My tank has a capacity of 19.5 gallons, right? That then makes my mpg 21.5

Just read my handbook and realised that when the yellow light comes on there is still 2 gallons in the tank, so that would mean that the 420 miles recorded on the trip meter would be divided by 17.5, giving an mpg of 24. I still think this is low for mainly A road driving.

Or, am I missing something in my calculations?

BTW, I also have higher than normal tyre pressures, about 38 front and rear.

My 2002 Disco TD5 has averaged over 30mpg (30.41 actually) over 90 tankfuls of diesel. Mostly longer runs (daily commute is 18 miles mainly dual carriageway), but has done some towing (a big trailer can knock mpg to around 26). Now done 90,000 miles, and seems to be getting more economical! Also get more mpg in summer than winter...

Yepp my 300tdi is pretty much at abot 28 to about 33 mixed driving even when i am getting off the beaten track . but i do ten to short shift the gears when driving in town . But when you need some action from the engine it does have the getup and go when needed .

1997-300tdi-Auto-A/C-EGR-CAT genuine 39,000. So far 27.4mpg combined average and 22+mpg when towing large caravan (Head wind and hilly). When possible I keep the revs to around 2000 and allow speed to build up to 52mph when top gear locks in. When necessary I put foot down to get up to speed sooner otherwise I just flog the revs forever. I want to boost the power to help with towing but it might just help to improve mpg if I keep a light right. Anyone got opinions on the following: Complete S/S Janspeed performance exhaust (no cat), K&N Air Filter, Allisport uprated direct replacement intercooler, New silicon pipes, EGR blank, Allisport ECM chip upgrade.:D

in order of cost/benefit, the egr plate then the intercooler.
then poss air filter and the pipes.

the others are nice but expensive. esp the exhaust system. remember the cat problem come the mot time?

Exactly right, I'm dubious about the chip benefit but others reassure that it takes into account the better breathing and adjust the fuel mixture to take advantage. One further possible add on is the LPG. As you said though Cost Benefit?
Perhaps this should be taken to a new thread? Know anything about Browns Fuel?

i was just thinking about your performance requirements for towing.
not really sure if you will see any mpg gain. prob worse cause you will be driving quicker!

re the chip upgrade. remember the poss damage to the engine?
if you really want power, then buy a v8!

re additives of any kind, i put them all in the same boat as snake oil.
