Below the rev counter next to the battery light, you might find a RED oil can light when ingnition is switched on.

You may think so, but today who knows, Speaking to a guy today , He tells me a story of how his Son was tightening the wheel studs in his own car, and he tightened them until he heard a "click". It was at that point the Father asked "why it should click?" Son replies, "because that is what the manual states". Apparently the manual had stated to use a torque wrench. Although all the son had was a standard socket and a piece of bar for added torque, he tightened the studs until they clicked!! So a lot of what I would consider standard knowledge is no longer such.

.A story I have repeated before, but whilst working in Halfrauds, we had a young lady turn up in a 4 months old Audi R8 and asked us to top it up with oil.... apparently the "low oil level" light had come on in Winchester and she had driven to Basingstoke to get the oil topped up. Needless to say, it sounded like a bag of nails and we suggested (after topping it up) that she take it straight to a main dealer

I can almost trump that!
A friend just bought a used car, the previous owner was an airline pilot, car came with loads of service history, bills etc, all good stuff!
Except, I was looking through it and found a bill from a main dealer.
"Nature of fault: customer complained of increased engine noise"
"Diagnosis: low oil level, oil topped up" £ 50+.
Worrying!

I was waiting at a set of lights to gross over when they turned red and the first car to stop was a middle aged gent in a Honda I soon noticed the car was a bit lob sided, no wonder both of the offside tyres were flat and wheel trims missing, so I tapped on the window to tell him just in case... and surprise, surprise he didn't know.
He then got out and when he saw the wheels he refused to drive it and move away from the lights.
So by now its London evening rush hour and there was a quite a tail back with buses and artic's trying to get around the car, lucky some one jumped in and took the car off around the corner.
With the wonders of technology I took a photo of a wheel, both were in the same state. That's pot holes for you

I think we tend to take general vehicle knowledge for granted.Contributors on here of 'a certain age' probably started their driving careers on a very basic car ie.Mini (real one!), Escort, Chevette etc. or in my case Minor, stuff you could see how it worked and fix it with basic tools, with a bit of help from your Dad. These days a 10 or 15 year old car is beginning to get complicated with ECUs and ABS etc and sensors all over the shop. Big plastic covers over the engine and lots of pipes when you lift the bonnet. Add to that the cost of insuring a young driver quite often means it's more attractive to buy a new car that comes with warranty and an insurance deal. Although this is a good thing, what with modern safety features etc, it does mean there is even less chance of a youngster leaning much about their car. A friend of mine has taught his two lads how to work on their cars, and now when they tell their mates at Uni they changed the brake pads on the weekend they look at them as if they're in possession of some strange unnatural knowledge!
