What is the maximum towing weight for Disco 1994

Car 3.5t max, but your trailer is plated well below that. People who think the authorities dont check this obviously dont drive through Welshpool on market day. They nick overweight trailers using a mobile weigh bridge. If you wanna tow 3.5t get a trailer plated at that. Still, towing 3.5t in an old disco whilst legal on right trailer, is not recommended. Mine did 3t ish and it was a little much for my old clutch and tired 300tdi !

That is how/what I found out GVWR is total weigh of vehicle/trailer being driven. Regardless what your license or trailer is plated for. You manufacture tag should have the rating stamped on it, don;t confuse the VIN tag by the windshield for manufacture tag which should be on/by the drivers door or the post by the door latch

You are right, VOSA often operate around cattle markets, like welshpool, and also in roadside laybys and checkpoints. And they can, and do, check trailer weights, lading and state of maintenance.
I don't agree that towing heavy weights with an old disco is a problem, though. I do it several times a week most weeks. Autobox saves strain on the clutch, and on my left leg!

This won't really help you but may provide some insight, but in Slovakia the law states that I can drive a setup up to 7.5 tonnes on a B+E license. The car paperwork (Discovery 2) states max towable weight is 3500kg so I can drive a car up to 3000kg including load/passengers, etc and tow a 3500kg trailer (or a 3500kg car and 3000kg trailer, etc, etc.). As both UK and SK are in EU, I would presume the law is similar, but this may not be the case.

Disco 1 is plated for 3500kg towed weight, but you should not fully load the car if you want to tow at that weight.

Disco 2 handbook gives the note regarding loaded weights for the car and trailer, but it is not given in the Disco 1 driver's handbook. Two people and their luggage only or the equivalent weight if you want to tow at 3500kg trailer weight.

Our trailer runs at 3500kg with the Ruston diesel loaded inside, or 2200kg without it.

As said above, the 85% rule is an advisory only, it has no standing in law, but if you had a grossly overweight trailer that looked dangerous, you'll attract the attention of the authorities.

The above page is an extract from my Defender handbook. I think if I remember correctly both Defenders and Discovery's have the same towing capacities.

I think you are right. My Ninety handbook has that page also. One thing I wonder is how many realise they are only designed to tow 1 tonne braked trailer off road. Seen plenty bigger in the woods!

The Land Rover figures are what take precedent, subject to any overriding legislation that may exist, the maximum weights are given in the handbooks for all of the cars so there shouldn't be any confusion about what is allowed or not.

Our Mercedes 614D bus has a braked trailer weight of 3500kg also, but with powered trailer brakes it can go to 7000kg trailer weight, a train weight of 13000kg.

12000kg is Max train weight if driving on d1e licence

Subcategory D1+E vehicles may be combined with trailers over 750kgs provided the combination does not exceed 12000kgs MAM and the laden weight of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle. The trailer must not be used for the carriage of passengers.

laden weight of the trailer must not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle in category c1e licences too, and licence code 107 limits a driver to 750kg trailers. This can be increased to 12000kg by passing c1e test or superseded by passing ce artic test

The further CPC and o licence can of worms need to be addressed unless exempt. (Dual purpose vehicles not for hire or reward perhaps)

Licence code 107 restricts you to 8.25 tonnes train weight, NOT to a trailer weighing 750kg. If the towing vehicle is 6 tonnes then you can tow 2250kg trailer, for example.

Passing CE test of the Class 3 or Class2 grade gets you upgraded on the C1+E, you don't need a Class 1 licence to do it.

13000kg train weight not valid in the UK, but it is in Germany and it is on the vehicle plate.

The bus is in the process of being converted to a motorhome, so C1 will be fine.

All Discos Defenders and RR's are the same- 3500KG
I tow an Ifor (1100kg) and two horses (550kg ish each) so only totalling 2200kg, no where near the limit. As said the 85% is a guide not the law.

Just checked the Mercedes plate, vehicle 5990kg, train weight 13000kg. Obviously not with an overrun braked trailer!
