Hi everyone

I own a 2005 manual diesel 2lt freelander td4. It can tow 2000kg.

I’m planning on towing my trailer with one 550/600kg horse in. I think the MAM of the trailer is 2500kg. If I had this down plated would the car still be able to pull this legally? If I was to get it down plated what would be the best option?

I’ve seen so many people say this car is terrible for towing but I’m hoping it will manage this fine!!!

Thanks

It'll tow just fine. I don't think you'd even need to down plate the MAM. I'm sure it's the actual mass that counts, not the plated rating. I've use a trailer plated at 3500 Kg MAM, but it's never loaded to more than 2,000Kgs.

Yeah, think it's just some European countries won't allow you to tow a trailer plated above the vehicles limit

I’ve seen any number of crappy jap pickups with 2T platings towing 3.5T trailers pass through police checks at markets.

If you passed your test after Jan 97, you’ll need to take a trailer test, though.

As I understand it and looking at your age you would need to pass your trailer test and you can tow up to the limit of your vehicle (2000kg) even if it’s plated higher than that, if not you are restricted to 750kg but out of respect for your horse I would take it anyway
